The downtown Sidney reading hit 100 degrees for a few minutes Thursday afternoon, one of the hottest days of the year though just shy of the 102 degree peak. Readings climbed to 105 elsewhere in the region as a dry system from the west coast moved in, with isolated thunder showers the only moisture expected. Farmers report a wet summer with green grasslands, and foresee a favorable fall harvest if rains arrive in time.

Stolen Car Recovered
A 22 year old Glendora Californian Richard V Payne was stopped by State Trooper Richard Larsen on Highway 30 east of Kimball for speeding at 8:08 p.m. Wednesday. An NCIC check showed the 1968 Chevrolet was stolen in Plymouth Michigan the day before and Payne was sought in Azusa California for grand theft. Three hitchhikers rode with Payne.

United Fund Budget Meet Is Set in Sidney
The Sidney United Fund board schedules its annual budget meeting for Monday August 17 at 8 p.m. in Avco Finance offices. Rainstorm caused postponement. all participating groups must send a representative to request funds and set next year’s budget. Last year’s goal of 12200 was met with eight organizations. more groups may join this year. Kickoff and completion dates for the upcoming appeal will be set at the meeting.

Forecasters expect a few thunder showers this afternoon and evening with fair, cooler conditions tonight and Saturday. Highs near 90 this afternoon, mid 80s Saturday, lows in the 50s. Rain chances 10 percent today and tonight, near zero Saturday, then generally fair and warm Sunday through Tuesday with upper 80s and 90s and lows 55 to 65.

Goranson Rites Are Monday
Esther Amanda Goranson 80 died Thursday at Memorial Hospital after a brief illness. Funeral services are 10:30 am Monday at First United Methodist Church with burial in Greenwood Cemetery. Gehrig and Son Funeral Home in charge. She was born March 9 1890 in Cuming County Nebraska to John A and Louisa Linn Johnson. She married Eben F Goranson April 1 1915 near West Point and they farmed near there before moving to a farm west of Gurley in 1924. They later moved to Sidney in 1955. She was member of the church and the Women’s Society for Christian Service. Surviving: one son Vernon of Gurley, three daughters Marie Johnson Sidney Irene Morris Scotts Mills Oregon and Gladys Hume Sidney, six grandchildren, one sister Anna Lindgren Wakefield and one brother Charles Johnson Oakland. Husband died November 1958, three sisters, two brothers, one granddaughter and one grandson preceded her in death.

Former U P Watchman Sam Karavelas Dies at 90
Funeral services are pending at Gehrig and Son Funeral Home for Sam Karavelas 90 who died Wednesday at a Scottsbluff hospital. A Minatare nursing home resident for three years he came to the United States in 1906 from Greece and worked 49 years for the Union Pacific railroad as a crossing watchman. Surviving is nephew John Livanis of Palo Alto California.

Canadian Is Charged In Auto Theft
James F. Keane a 35 year old resident of LaSalle Quebec is jailed in Cheyenne County awaiting a hearing before U S Commissioner Gerald Matzke on auto theft charges. He was arrested at 7 30 a m after State Trooper Ron Gusman found him asleep in a stolen 1970 Continental two door at Highway 30 six and a half miles west of Sidney. The vehicle had been stolen August 11 in Las Vegas Nevada. Keane was eastbound when arrested.
