Hot Weather Damages Corn Across North Central Nebraska

North central Nebraska corn suffers from heat and drought with moisture shortages. Assistant state statistician W Howard Forsyth says from Aurora to Lexington and as far south as Central City along the Platte the crop is badly hurt, though eastern areas look better. Central portions may curb state production, while western counties show no damage and panhandle fields promise bumper yields. A 600 acre state hospital farmland at Norfolk will be silaged due to losses, with Grand Island Soldiers Home crop lagging but potentially 15 to 20 bushels per acre, possibly 35 with rain.

Kinship Between Farm Tenants And Landlords Explored

A census based study shows farm tenancy rising since 1880 with tenant farmers reaching 38.6 percent of all U.S. farmers. Many tenants are relatives of landlords, especially sons or sons in law, boosting community ties and potential path to ownership. Wisconsin tops related tenants at about 40 percent. North Dakota is lowest at just over 20 percent. In over half of counties in several states, related tenants exceed 30 percent, signaling broader familial linkage in tenancy patterns.
