Sidney Nebraska hosts the Cheyenne County Fair and Race Meeting on September 18 19 20 and 21 featuring events and community activities across four days. Local organizers promote exhibitors contests and racing programs with entries and schedules to be announced.
The Village Trustees met August 9 with five members present. A unanimous resolution makes cement sidewalk contractors responsible for walks they lay and allows rebuilding at their cost if not on grade. The board shifts to first and third Fridays at 4 pm and orders cement crossings on Lincoln Pine and Chestnut Washington. Various street and cemetery bills are approved and warrants directed. The meeting adjourns to August 16, 1912.
Roy E. Nelson and Demetrius A. Hurd presented final proof on their homesteads before County Judge Gapen on August 15 and 16 with witnesses Frank Hand Abiram Johnson Vernon A Nelson Frank Farrel D A Huru and John Rasmussen.
Cheyenne County Nebraska board approves plans for a forty foot Lodgepole Creek bridge in section 31 township 14 range 49 and authorizes bids. They dismiss H D Moore as construction supervisor for the new courthouse and authorize road and highway actions including road 203A, public highway status, and repairs. Claims totaling various funds are audited and warrants ordered.
Col. Hardy spent a short time in Cheyenne this week to observe the frontier celebration. He met his daughter and her husband there during a business trip through Utah.
R. E. L. Jackson's father died in Slater Missouri on August 6 at age eighty one. Jackson reached his bedside a few hours before death. Mrs Scanlon's sister Mrs Ginapp and her son John, and their brother John Connelly returned to Brady Island Nebraska Wednesday morning.
Dennis Joseph Scanlon of Sidney Nebraska died after illness. Born May 9 1850 in Tipperary Ireland he was a pharmacist and former mayor. Funeral at Catholic Church with Father Kampman and Father O Sullivan. He left wife Julia Connelly and relatives in attendance.
A cyclone struck C A Glassburns house in Sidney Draw near Dye about eight Thursday night. Ten family members were in the kitchen when the house was lifted and carried 30 rods before smashing into kindling. All the family were injured, some seriously, with Carrie Miland and Max and Mrs injured and scalded. The barn was unroofed and a sod house with a sod roof blown to pieces. The storm appeared centered on the site. no other damage reported. Editor Wisner of the Bayard Transcript visited the office last Monday, briefly.
Special correspondent reports the familiar Frontier Days celebration in Cheyenne Aug 16 1912 drawing large crowds and strong attendance. Rail rates attract visitors while business leaders showcase civic pride with bright decorations and lively streets. The city is praised for good governance and hospitality as Tribune editor Mr Cochrane is thanked for courtesy.
Railroad progress continues on the second track as workers rush repairs. Travelers include Earl McConnell and sister bound for Cheyenne, and J A Nicholson and spouse off to Cheyenne for Frontier celebration. U P Hotel guests from Rawlins and Cheyenne seen in Sidney as rail officials plan improvements. Total U S rail earnings rise 61 percent in July year over year, adding 36 million dollars.
R A Blake returned from a business trip in eastern Nebraska. Mrs D R Campbell came back Saturday evening from a delightful outing. Mrs Roscoe Zimmer and child ren returned last week from a visit in North Platte and Conad. Frank Stafford was called to David City Nebraska Wednesday night due to his brother illness. Tom Davoren of Hoge Kansas stays with his mother and aunt. Mrs G H Parks of Sidney stopped Tuesday en route home from eastern Nebraska.
Threshers estimate an average of twenty bushels per acre around Lodgepole with some fields reaching 35 bushels and others dropping to 15 bushels per acre.
John Thompson a veteran actor known as On Hand Thompson circulated among locals Thursday to promote a show at the opera house scheduled for Thursday evening.
Forty one Cheyenne County teachers gathered for a week long institute led by County Superintendent Mrs. Stark. Prof. O W Neale Miss Hicok and Principal Chambers presented courses on art reading arithmetic civics and language arts while sessions included reed work stenciling leather work and round table discussions. A long enrollment list notes many attending teachers from Sidney Lodgepole Potter and surrounding towns.
