Fair Festivities Signal End of Judging at Cheyenne County

Judging wrapped Thursday night and in the early morning, exhibitors arrived to view ribbons. Cheryl Dunkle won best of fair for her painting Little South Canyon, Jime Bremer topped ceramics with a chessboard table, Betty Wright won in clothing, Kathryn Liljegren took food, and Marie Nicholson earned top flower honors. Open horse shows, 4-H livestock judging, and a stage show featuring Charlie Louvin and the Maphises highlight the day. Saturday features sheep and swine judging, horse racing, and a parade of champions, with RCA rodeos over two nights. Sunday continues with 4-H horse judging and livestock events, followed by a parade and barbecue at the fairgrounds. Exhibits release Monday after a watermelon feed and tractor pull.

Cheyenne County group eyes FHA housing loans for seniors

A Cheyenne County coalition led by Sidney Housing Authority aims to form a non profit corporation to apply for a Farmers Home Administration loan program. The plan would fund up to 750000 per project at 3 percent interest for rural rental units for senior citizens or moderate income families, with rent subsidized by the low rate. A survey will define needs, and committees on site, steering, and survey were named as the group seeks $10000 more in pledges after Sidney Housing Authority adds 5000.

Sidney City Petition Drives Fluoridation Vote

Sidney City Councilman Ed Bauman announced a petition drive to place a fluoridation question on the ballot. Suit targets vote on school aid bill in Nebraska

State Sen David Stahmer named in suit by supporters of the state aid to education bill says he would be glad to lose the suit if it ends Nebraska’s school property taxes. Leonard Lawrence, president of the Nebraska State School Boards Association, filed to block a November ballot on the measure, arguing the constitution bars voting on bills that appropriate state funds. The state Supreme Court case was reported by the Associated Press.

Sidney Rural Rental housing survey plan announced

Plans for the Sidney Rural Rental housing survey were announced to guide new housing in Cheyenne County towns. The survey form appears in the Sidney Telegraph and will be available at local banks real estate offices the Chamber of Commerce and city offices. John Gottschalk chair of the survey committee says two completed surveys are needed for each proposed unit and that responses are not binding. The survey aims to determine housing needs for a grant and questions can be directed to the Farmers Home Administration the City of Sidney Chamber of Commerce or Gottschalk.

Nebraska report places Cheyenne County 13th among 21 counties for crime per capita in 1973. The county logged 212 serious crimes, 19.7 per 1,000 residents, including 5 felonious assaults, 46 burglaries, 157 larcenies, and 4 auto thefts, with no murder, rape, or robberies recorded. Sidney accounted for 125 incidents, rural Cheyenne for 87.

Heavy thunderstorms and hail hit Nebraska region

Heat and humidity persist with showers and storms forecast through Saturday in Nebraska and western Iowa. A moist air mass remains over the area with a weak cold front moving east. Central and eastern Nebraska saw strong winds and golf ball size hail near Merna, with 1.18 inches of rain at Kimball and minor damage elsewhere. Sterling reported a tornado on Highway 6 with cars lifted from a junkyard and three inch hail noted.

Jones plans rezoning request for Sidney Plaza shopping center

Arlo Jones says he will request to rezone a 10 acre tract on 1th Ave from residential to commercial at the Aug 26 Sidney City Council meeting for the proposed Sidney Plaza Shopping Center. Plans include a shaded buffer, night lighting, and drainage redesign to reduce impact on Olsen Drive and Craig Ave neighbors.
