Drilling Rigs Active In Western County Regions

Drilling activity reported across western counties with multiple oil wells in Potter, Kimball, and Banner fields. Notable notes include Shell's No 1 in Johnson Field and Liners of Petro Petroleum with several NE SE and NW NW locations, average depths around 2,349 feet, and numerous marked discoveries though some dry holes outside Cheyenne County.

Public seeks tips on two Sidney hit and run crashes

Sidney Police Chief Sol Willis asked residents to report information about two hit and run incidents Wednesday that injured two youths. Richard Larson, 6, was hit on 13th Avenue near the old Burke Apartments and center underpass, while 4 year old Rocky Howerter was struck on Cedar Street. neither driver remained at the scene.

The Telegraph announces its annual Back to School edition to be printed next Wednesday August 21 with school facts for Cheyenne area and ads from Sidney merchants. A free Back-To-School show for children will be held at the Fox Theatre on Saturday August 24.

Less Penalty Wheat Seen Over County

Cheyenne County agents warn that fewer farmers will pay penalties this year as more seek to offset over quota wheat. With penalties at 1.12 per bushel over allotment, producers face options including bonds or warehouse receipts. Last year Cheyenne faced 804,960 bushels with penalties totaling 909,604.80 dollars.

Millet Load First Harvest Reported At Lorenzo Elevator

The Lorenzo Farmers Elevator reported the first white Proso millet load of the year. Harvested by Dean Bules west of Peet, the 57 pound per bushel grain with 8 percent moisture was about 35 bushels per acre. Officials noted top millet weights around 50 pounds. A large millet acreage covers southern Cheyenne County and northeastern Colorado with birdseed firms as a key market.

Gurley Youth's Hereford Wins Grand Champion Steer Honors

At the 1957 Cheyenne County Fair a Hereford steer shown by Robert Rowan of Gurley captured the grand champion title in the 4-H fat calf division. Reserve honors went to Gary Policky of Sidney. The sale of 101 4-H fat calves, a record, will occur tomorrow afternoon in front of the fairgrounds grandstand, followed by events and awards including grand and reserve champions in other classes.

Annie Gieb 22 of Potter lightly injured in a one car rollover on a dirt road. She was taken to Cheyenne County Memorial Hospital after the Potter incident.

Musil Named to FHA Unit for Cheyenne County

Millard S Musil a Potter farmer and musician is named as a new 2 committeeman for the Farmers Home Administration unit in Cheyenne County succeeding Maurice Nelson who leaves after three years. Other two committeemen are Arvin Livingston and Ernest L Myers. John Clouse says committee members serve three years with one new appointment annually. The county committee decides loan eligibility and certifies farm values for FHA purchases or improvements and helps adapt the program to local conditions. The FHA does not issue loans if credit could be obtained from other sources.

Cancer Gifts Total Falls Short of 1956 Total

The Sidney chapter of the American Cancer Society reports 1957 contributions totaling $2,935.63, led by Mrs Marguerite McMillen as treasurer. This amount is $1,206.47 less than the 1956 total, with further contributions still arriving.

The Cheyenne County Sheriff Office adds golden five point stars for Sheriff Bil Schulz and deputies Ker mit Brumbaugh and Eugene Morris. The stars replace concealed badges and mark a return to historic western officer insignia, not inspired by television.
