Copenhagen based AP notes Denmark smokes 190 cigars per person annually in 1955 with about 140 of those being cigars or cheroots. The boom is driven by middle aged and elderly women who smoke in restaurants or at home, with Danish tobacco rolled cigars forming the supply. 8,000 to 10,000 workers produce cigars for export to South Africa and the Far East, less to the United States.
