Jake Mahr to Be Inspector for the ICC

Jake Mahr a 30 year Union Pacific veteran announced Thursday he has accepted an inspector of locomotives post with the Interstate Commerce Commission Bureau of Locomotive Inspection. He will leave Sept 1 for six weeks of training in Washington DC before assignment to a territory.

Rent Controls Definitely Go September 30

Cheyenne County ends federal rent controls on September 30 after a limited period. Affected are only units built before 1947, with post-1947 housing already exempt. Landlords and tenants retain access to local courts for violations or evictions, per board chair Lawrence Marrin and federal guidance from Washington.

Iowa Airman Breaks Ankle In Auto Crash

A'le Billy Bloomhuff, 21, of Muscatine, Iowa, broke his right ankle when his car rolled over on Highway 30 west of Sidney after dropping a wheel off the pavement and attempting to pull back onto the road. Four cars passed without aid before a State Patrolman arrived. Bloomhuff was treated at Kimball hospital. Damage to the 1951 Henry J. car was estimated at 450 dollars.

Defense Area Rent Control Board Resigns En Masse

The Sidney Defense Area Rent Board quit on Wednesday amid Washington orders that ended the full-time director’s position. With rent controls likely ending Sept 30 in Cheyenne County, local landlords and tenants may lose jurisdiction 45 days early, as regional officials prepare to take over. Members voiced frustration over federal moves and the delay in securing a local director.

County GOP reorganizes central committee officers

The Cheyenne County Republican Central Committee re elected most officers Wednesday night with Francis Egging of Potter continuing as secretary treasurer John Peetz Jr Sidney was elected county chairman replacing J K Mahr and Mrs Carl Christ Jr Sidney was chosen vice chairman replacing Mrs Jack Knicely. A plan for an advisory committee on appointments was rejected in favor of precinct chairmen serving as needed. Grievance committees were considered for each precinct to ease chief officers workload.

State to Auction Cheyenne County School Land Renewal Tract

State officials plan a Sept 15 16 auction at the Cheyenne County courthouse selling 36 commercial 34 residential and a nine acre future school tract as part of city expansion. Values set at 90 percent of appraisals with inspections allowed prior to sale. Proceeds go to the permanent school fund.

Last Year's High Mark Is Doomed

The first seven and one half months of 1953 have brought an all time high for new construction in Sidney, suggesting a four million dollar building year. Through August 10 the year neared 2.5 million, with most permits for residential work. Large projects looming include a $300,000 Sidney Community Hotel and a $750,000 hospital, while FHA observers praise Sidney's boom.

Traffic Control Hit Highway 30 Relocation Debate At Kimball

State representatives from Sidney attended a Kimball meeting about moving U S Highway 30 to bypass Kimball Dix and Bushnell. L N Ross called highway traffic through Sidney intolerable. Officials warned relocation could shift tourism revenue to Wyoming and Colorado and hurt Sidney and Kimball alike.

New Owners Take Over Hazel's Cafe

Carter Craig arrives from Akron Colorado to assume management of Hazel's Cafe in Sidney. Craig previously ran Burlington Hotel Cafe in Akron and Night and Day Cafe in Ainsworth, with seven years in the restaurant business. No building changes or name changes planned as Hazel's Cafe keeps its identity while Craig introduces Sunday dinners featuring steak and seafood. The Craigs have rented a house at 831 Illinois and Bian to move in soon.

Mrs Herbert Died After Year Long Illness

Mrs. M. M. Herbert 79 longtime Cheyenne County resident and wife of Ft Sidney veteran died at her Sidney home after a year of illness. Funeral at St Patrick’s Church with burial in the family plot. Survivors include her widower and three children with many grandchildren and a sister. Born in Moravia she came to Blue Hill Nebraska at age twelve and moved to Sidney in 1887.

Five Inductees In August Call From Cheyenne County
