County Sheep Entries Take State Awards
Jack Peters of Lorenzo and the Johnson Farms of Lodgepole won honors at the Nebraska State Sheep Day Snow and Sale in Lincoln. Peters’s Hampshire ewe entry earned first place and Johnson Farms’ corriedale ewe entry took third. Prices for purebred sheep were lower than last year, with the Hamp shire ram from Emerald Lundeen & Son of Axtell selling for 160 dollars, down from 395. Other high prices included 125 for Lundeen rams and 100 and 110 for University of Nebraska rams. some rams sold for 40 dollars.

USDA Reports Record Wheat on Hand for Coming Year
Economists at the Federal Department of Agriculture estimate the 1953 crop will yield about 1.135 billion bushels with 5 million bushels imported for feed. Cheyenne County Soil Conservation District reports a record year of terracing with 116 miles laid out by harvest time. July alone saw 48 miles of terraces while the staff built three and a half miles of diversions five dams and about eight acres of waterways. Wet Paving Blamed for Accident East of Sidney
Rain slicked Highway 30 three miles east of Sidney caused a car accident injuring Mr and Mrs Dean M Howard of Brea California. Their 1952 Studebaker sustained 200 to 300 dollars in damage after skidding into a telephone pole. Sheriff’s deputy Bart Taylor investigated. Two men injured in a later Dalton area sideswipe were Harry R Worth 65 of Dalton and Henry Schaaf 24 of Scottsbluff. Worth’s 1949 Buick and Kirschman’s 1951 Chrysler each sustained about 600 dollars in damage. Frank M Allison 19 of Sidney reported a brake failure causing his 1950 Ford truck to roll over, with about 1000 dollars in damage. Fence damage to Ed Miles property listed at 10 dollars.
