Buffalo Bend ends entertaining season

Buffalo Bend near Potter closes its fifth season of home grown entertainment run by Doug Reetz with 11 cast members. Dr James Thayer of Sidney wrote all songs. The show blends Western Nebraska history with music and audience participation, drawing locals and tourists alike.

Nebraska Board hikes taxes to record levels

Mari Sandoz Featured in Nebraska History Magazine

The Nebraska History article in the summer issue highlights Mari Sandoz and her literary apprenticeship in the 1920s. Carter May Stop Here in Nebraska Whistle Stop Plan

Local Democrats hear a possible whistle stop tour by presidential candidate Jimmy Carter across Nebraska in September or October. An Omaha campaign coordinator and Cheyenne County officials mention an Omaha address for Carter, a mainline train run through eight to ten stops, and a stop in Kimball before Scottsbluff. The plan includes Mondale aboard if feasible and future political events in Sidney with a Zorinsky Senate campaign chairman and youth outreach in area schools.

County fair opens with rodeo in Cheyenne County

The Cheyenne County Fair and Rodeo launches Thursday, Nebraska's largest event, running through Monday August 23. Activities include 4-H contests at St Patrick's High School, a style revue, livestock judging and sales, a parade with area royalty, and the RCA approved rodeo start in the evening. Top rodeo cowboys and stock from the National Finals Rodeo era are expected to perform, with prize money across five divisions and a special livestock sale moved to Saturday.

Marijuana harvest found in Cheyenne County fields

Cheyenne County deputies led by Sheriff Oren Cox harvested a large marijuana crop in the eastern part of the county on Thursday. No arrests were made and the owners remain unknown. The crop is estimated worth about $1000 if properly treated and processed.

Explosion hits Hastings grain elevator

An explosion at the Central Soya grain elevator in Hastings injured three workers. Fire officials said two fires followed the blast in the head house where a construction crew was operating. One worker had third degree burns over about 90 percent of the body and the others had second and third degree burns over about 15 percent.

County Fairs Open Across Cheyenne County Region

County fair season is underway with the Kimball Banner and Logan County fairs opening this week. Deuel and Morrill County fairs start next week, with regional attractions including a two hour show by a Colorado group, and Western star Stonewall Jackson on August 20.

Independent Cable plans expansion in Sidney approved

The Eltra Corp board formally approves expansion of the Independent Cable Midwec plant in Sidney to manufacture telephone load coils and cable. About 20 new workers will join 80 total this fall, with equipment cost around 379000 and bids proceeding. Construction aims to start soon and finish by December 1976, with training starting late September.
