Farm tour promotes irrigation pivots across Morrill County

The Wheat Belt Public Power District seventh annual tour highlighted the rise of center pivot irrigation, from 11 pivots in 1968 to over 250 today, irrigating more than 30 000 acres and boosting the local economy by about eight million dollars over eight years. Experts warn rising power costs and farm prices may limit growth while noting long term electricity will be needed and coal could supply future options. Local farmers and bankers discussed financing irrigation and the evolving energy landscape, with mixed outlooks on short term gains and long term viability.

Sidney board holds line on mill levy in 1976 77 budget

The Sidney School Board unanimously approved the 1976 77 budget totaling 2 168 714, tapping 300 000 from cash reserves to ease tax pressure. They rejected a sinking fund, and expect the local property tax need to drop to about 1 143 214. The plan may trim the levy by less than a mill due to higher district valuations.
