Marx Koehnke of the Nebraska Certified Potato Growers urged Cheyenne County farmers to raise certified seed potatoes on summer fallow land. Four men were sentenced to prison terms in Kimball District Court after pleading guilty to issuing worthless checks and forgery. Charles Smith Jr of Oklahoma City and another Charles Smith Jr were arrested in Sidney for checks at Larsen Jewelry and Penney Store. Walter Bengston and Nelson Gunn of Pine Bluffs received terms in state reformatories or penitentiaries for bad checks at Wayside Camp Stahla’s Market and Dix Thompson Food Store.

Funeral services for George W Hendriks 69 will be at 2 30 this Friday at the Methodist Church with Rev Walter Jewett in charge. Burial in Greenwood Cemetery. Survived by wife Clara, one son Cecil, two sisters and two brothers. Born February 23 1880 near Muscatine Iowa. Family from Sidney since 1925.
An early morning blaze at 1328 Osage damaged the west side of a two story home of Mr. and Mrs. De ward C. Jelinek. Firefighters arrived around 3:30 AM and worked until 6 AM to extinguish the fire, with $7000 in damage and no injuries. Neighbors and residents stayed in downstairs and upstairs apartments as fire crews praised rapid response and noted a brief delay when a hose broke.

Approximately .20 of an inch of rain fell in Sidney Tuesday night breaking a long drought. Farmers in Lorenzo area reported nearly an inch of moisture. The storm was spotty, with some locales soaked and others skipped. It is the first widespread moisture since harvest began last month and more rain is needed for fall planting. Prospects favor later fall wheat planting due to Hessian Fly concerns. In eastern Nebraska little pre September 15 planting occurs, and moisture is hoped between now and planting time to aid germination. Last fall was dry and wheat started poorly. Around-the-clock irrigation pumping continues. crops in the valley are waking but demand much attention. The state agricultural stats division noted the drought in its crop report, warning corn needs rain while other crops vary. Harvests: Winter wheat mostly done. alfalfa prospects lower due to moisture shortage. Potatoes and wild hay yield well. cattle and feeders in good condition. The only precip in the first week of August was 0.8 at Scottsbluff and 0.3 at Sidney, with slightly above normal totals for April through July.
Jerry Livingston earned his Star Scout badge after tests before a Board of Review on Tuesday night. The board included Fred McHugh as chair and Rae Jones as district chairman. A two car collision in Dalton Wednesday evening caused heavy damage to a 1949 Buick driven by Paul Weible and a 1948 Chevrolet driven by Marjorie A. Geller, with no injuries reported. Separately, a 1949 Plymouth four door driven by Albert F. Sanders collided with a 1939 Chevrolet two door driven by Donald Deaver near Triska's Service Station. damages were not yet estimated.
