Electric church bulletin signs planned in Sidney

Following success in other towns a group of Sidney citizens subscribe to erect and maintain a large electric sign for a year. The Nonsectarian Society for the Encouragement of Religion promotes a high bulletin with twenty colored bulbs, a picture, invitation and biblical quotation, replacing after one year.

Local Draft Exemption Claims Process Under Way

Physical examinations of the one hundred and fifty drafted men were completed. Notices are being mailed informing each man of the results. Exemption claims for dependents may be filed within seven days, with ten days to submit proof. Local boards decide within three days of proof. Exemption certificates may be recalled. refusals may be appealed to the district board, then to the president.

Meeting Tonight Urges County Defence Council Formation

Governor Neville calls Cheyenne County to organize a County Council of Defence. A meeting for that purpose will be held at the District Court room Friday evening at 7 o clock. Officials urge swift action to coordinate local defense measures.

No County Fair This Year for Cheyenne County

Cheyenne County Fair directors met last Friday night and voted unanimously not to hold a fair this year. They cited farmers' manpower shortages and heavy war-related expenses including Red Cross drives, saying a fair would place undue strain on time and finances, and the public is expected to understand.

Y M C A Work to Be Told by Good Speakers

After a storm disrupted last Sunday’s church gathering, a union meeting is set for next Sunday at eight in the Methodist church. State speakers will describe Y M C A efforts in the war zone, with emphasis on intellectual and spiritual life and clean recreation for soldiers. Everyone is invited.

Library Board adopts new borrowing rules for recent books

The library board adopts charges on new publications at ten cents per volume until cost recovered, five cents to reserve any volume, and five cents for a second borrower’s card. The Book Committee expects many of the latest titles to arrive in a few days and urges patrons to watch for them.

County Sunday School Convention at Potter Methodist Church

The annual county Sunday School convention will be held at the Potter Methodist church on Wednesday August 29. The event is for all denominations with an all-day program and a closing evening session by Margaret E Brown featuring an illustrated China lecture. All county Sunday Schools should send delegates. the general public is welcome.

Civil Service Exams Set for August 17 1917

United States Civil Service Commission announces two general examinations on August 17 at district offices including Sidney. Forest and Field Clerk positions offer two vacancies in Forest Clerk at 1100 yearly in Custer SD and Halsey NE plus Field Clerk eligibles in Reclamation Service at up to 125 monthly. Typewriter work across Field Service at 720 to 1100 yearly, typically about 900. Special request for qualified applicants. details from Local Secretary Marius Christensen.

Cramer and Bartlett United in Dalton Nuptials

Eugene Philip Cramer and Anna Belle Bartlett of Dalton Nebr were united in marriage on Sunday afternoon August 5 1917 at the Methodist parsonage in Sidney Nebr with Reverend L E Lewis officiating The couple left for Dalton to reside and were at home to friends later Dr G D Webster returned Wednesday from a brief visit with his sister in Denver.

Hodgson's Greater Shows to Visit Sidney Next Week

Hodgson's Greater Shows will perform in Sidney from the 13th to the 18th under the Sidney Fire Department with ten attractions and an All-American Band. Mr D. Wyatt of Rockford Missouri is visiting Sidney and praises the county. Civilization, a photo play, will be shown at the Idéal Theatre on August 25 and 26. Cheyenne County Teachers Association meets August 27 for five days with Miss Anna McFadden organizing the program. Roads to Potter are reported in good condition after recent grading.

Sidney Thursday drew more land buyers than ever before with farmers taking a break from farm duties to seize opportunities. Demand was high, and arranging transportation proved challenging as the crowd pressed for conveyances.

Camping trip near Cedar Grove with Hand sisters chaperoned by Mrs Emerson

A cheerful south Cedar grove camping party began Thursday under chaperone Mrs Clara Emerson. Attending were Miss Amelia Thomas and the Hand sisters Hazel Vera Nora, Edith Georgiana, with an aunt close by to assist if the group faced rabbits or wild beasts.

Injury to Siders Boy From BB Gun Eye Wound

A seven year old boy sustained a painful eye injury last Friday when a playmate discharged a bb gun during play. Two shots entered his right eye and doctors fear possible loss of sight while striving to save the eye. The outcome remains uncertain.

Missing Rug Confounds Miss Braasch Millinery

During a heavy Sunday night rain a rug in Miss Braasch’s millinery shop was soaked and later vanished after the porter moved it to a back yard line. Thursday the rug reappeared about a block away rolled as if used for a bed, leaving locals startled by frequent disappearances and odd returns.

Rainstorm damages downtown cellars and shops

A heavy Sunday night rain damaged cellars especially downtown. Allied structures behind new buildings suffered poor conditions and gutters flooded windows. Variety stores incurred the greatest harm as workers removed about one hundred tubs of water in two hours. Dampness affected several other spots.

Helping Hand Society Forms Cheyenne County Red Cross Branch

The Helping Hand society met on Wednesday with Mrs. Hanson. A good turnout and luncheon preceded two new members being voted in Afra Ernest Cassidy and Mrs. Charles Walker. Mrs. Clara Emerson received silver spoons as a wedding present from the club. A branch of the Cheyenne County Red Cross was formed with nine members, with current officers to serve as Red Cross officers.

O E S Chapter Holds Pleasant Wednesday Meeting

The O E S Chapter held an unusually pleasant meeting on their regular Wednesday evening. A full house witnessed the initiatory work after which departing sister Mrs J A Nicholson received a silver spoon set from George Taylor. The group adjourned to Bassett and Sittler’s for ice cream and cake.

Hodgson's Street Carnival arrives in Sidney for six days starting Monday August 1. Fresh from Scottsblatt it features ten attractions and a strong band. Milton Wright son of Mr and Mrs C M Wright of this city enlisted in the United States Navy in December 1913. He trained at Goat and Mare Islands San Francisco and has served aboard the armored cruiser Cincinnati and the Piscataqua guarding Guam. He rose from apprentice seaman to first class quartermaster with a $52 monthly pay plus board laundry and full necessities.
