Groundwater Act SB 577 Set to Go Into Effect Soon

Nebraska irrigators may drill irrigation or other wells without permits if they register each well and follow spacing rules. The Groundwater Management Act becomes effective August 23 and allows NRDs to set control areas with permits required for wells yielding over 100 gallons per minute inside them. Registration deadlines shortened to 20 days after completion. penalties exist for unregistered wells and enforcement powers include cease and desist orders.

Jean Shepard to Headline Cheyenne County Fair Grandstand

Country singer Jean Shepard will perform at the Cheyenne County Fair on Friday August 15 at 8 p.m. The Grand Ole Opry unit will join her in Nashville Tennessee-based spectacle. Shepard, a veteran with 23 albums and hits including Satisfied Mind and The Dear John Letter, has Grammy nominations and past TV exposure with Red Foley Ozark Jubilee.

Government to appeal beef grading decision

The U.S. Solicitor General authorized the Justice Department to appeal a district court ruling halting the USDA beef grading standards. DOJ and USDA will file briefs with the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in St Louis, with arguments scheduled for the week of September 8. The standards were set for April 14 but were blocked days before.

Murder charge filed in court in Cheyenne County

Bernita L. Andrews of Sidney was arraigned in Cheyenne County Court on a second degree murder charge for the death Tuesday night of her husband Donald Andrews. Bond set at $10,000. she remains jailed. The case stemmed from a shooting at their Elm Street home after a relative called for help.
