In a lively campaign season voters will see the familiar smiles of Gen. Dwight Eisenhower and Gov. Adlai Stevenson. The Republican nominee, 61, and the Democratic candidate, 52, project confidence as they pursue widespread support in a competitive race.
Sidney Chamber of Commerce launches a nationwide campaign to attract firms to western Nebraska. Secretary George Kolzow says letters invite top companies to learn about Sidney’s rail access, nearby oil and gas activity, and available plant sites. Water supply questions remain a concern for industrial needs.
A Housing and Home Financing Agency survey led by Earl H. Meyerotto of Denver visits Sidney to assess progress on low cost houses. The aim is to reach Sidney’s quota of two hundred homes, with C A Story Agency having built one hundred so far. Meyerotto plans to meet Sioux Ordnance Depot officials and boost construction for defense program needs.
J. K. Mahr announces two appointments by the Cheyenne County Republican Central Committee. Mrs. Jack Knicely becomes vice chairman overseeing women's activities and John Peetz Jr. chairs the Cheyenne County Young Republicans. A special meeting is set for 8 o'clock Monday night in the district courtroom of the Cheyenne County Courthouse.
A field demonstration of Minneapolis Moline plows and tillage tools will be held at the Charles Gathman farm near Gurley on Thursday August 14 at 1 p m. The event is sponsored by Foland Farm Machinery of Sidney with E A Hyatt of Kimball and Lydiatt Implement Co of Chappell Mi dealers. Delivery of diesel equipment was delayed by a steel strike.
Howard E. Jeppesen begins work at The American National Bank taking over duties previously held by H. R. Burgett who moved to cashier. Jeppesen comes from First National Bank in Omaha where he worked two and a half years. He is unmarried and brother of Clifford Jeppesen and Mrs Vernon Anderson of Sidney.
A passing thunderstorm cooled Sidney from 98 to 58 and dropped 0.33 inch, with lighter totals countywide. Rains dampen drought effects, improve soil moisture for fall seeding, and aid pastures, hay, and cattle across eastern Nebraska and nearby counties.
Invitations go to Panhandle County Officers Association members for a quarterly meeting at Rushville on August 20. Leslie Stull, Box Butte County commission chairman, serves as association president. Walter Raecke and Robert Crosby, gubernatorial candidates, are among expected guests. Sheridan County officials plan program and entertainment.
Public auctions in Cheyenne County yielded 62 300 in state school land lease bonuses. Verne Ankeny paid 20 600 to keep Section 16 16 49, others included 9 000 for North half of Section 14 12 51 and smaller sums for multiple tracts. All sales await official approval and cover bonuses only.
The True and Brown Drilling Company plugged a test well north of Lisco in Garden County deeming it a dry hole with no oil signs. The test, one of the county’s fastest drills, completed in one week reaching 3700 feet.
Nebraska fixes a 1953 wheat goal of 4 300 000 acres within a national 72 million acre target. Frank Reed, chairman of the State Agricultural Mobilization Committee, announced the plan on Monday.
James Brawer, 22, a Fort Warren Air Base airman, died from injuries in an auto crash west of Bushnell Saturday night. A coroner's jury ruled the death unavoidable after the inquest held Thursday. Three other soldiers survived with minor injuries. the parked truck driver and truck driver had left the scene.
Loita Mauer, a 20 year old Loveland Colorado native with Dalton roots, tied for second in the high jump at the Olympic trials with four feet ten and eight tenths inches. She has competed in five meets including nationals and will begin Colorado A and M as a third quarter junior as two brothers attend the same college and a younger sister also plans to enroll.
Nebraskans will vote in November on six proposed amendments. They cover a State Board of Education, motor vehicle tax method, legislator salaries, a constitutional convention size, salaries for courts and commissions, and publication frequency of proposed amendments. The Telegraph will publish a series explaining each proposal.
Farmers are urged to bring wheat samples for the Cheyenne County Fair Wheat Show. Entries can be prepared now and delivered to the Cheyenne County Farmers Non Stock building or brought on entry day Wednesday August 20. Officials say readiness will help make the show Nebraska’s largest. Cooperation of growers is key.
The Nebraska State Employment Service reports July activity rose as workers sought harvest jobs, with total 3,998 contacts and 262 women and 194 veterans among them. Wheat harvest and farm roles accounted for 1,051 placements, while 291 found non agricultural positions. End of month openings totaled 202 across clerical, domestic, agricultural, skilled, semi skilled, and unskilled categories.
Fred Zimmer publisher of The Cedar County News at Hartington Nebraska stopped in Sidney to visit friends brief. He began newspaper work with The Sidney Telegraph over thirty years ago under Guy V. Doran. Zimmer is the son of late Roscoe and Mrs Zimmer, longtime Sidney residents, and is a Sidney High School graduate who attended the University of Nebraska School of Journalism.
Judge Deuel Fair Cheyenne County Home Agent Violet Shepherd and her summer assistant Dora Huestle will be in Chappell Tuesday August 12 to judge women s and 4 H entries at the Deuel County Fair.
Plans for the District Convention of the American Legion and its Auxiliary in Sidney on Tuesday September 30 are advancing. District officers met with host group representatives to finalize details including a luncheon parade and banquet with district meetings and noted that speakers have been contacted to draw delegates from across the Nebraska Panhandle.
A string of recent accidents in Sidney caused notable property damage but no serious injuries, with six incidents between August 2 and August 6. Vehicles involved include a 1946 Chevrolet, a 1952 GMC truck, a 1951 Ford, a 1947 Chevrolet, a 1952 Cadillac, and others, with total damages ranging from minor to a few hundred dollars. Police report details vary by incident.
A crude oil tanker and a trailer truck collided on a Highway 19 bridge north of Dalton. The tanker exploded, burning ten acres of grass and destroying 200 feet of telephone cable, with 500 yards of oil slicks on the highway. Damages near $7,500. 36 hour Bell outage expected for repairs.
Beer dealers from Sidney and nine other towns meet today at The American Legion Club in Sidney starting 1 30 p m. The session is called by the United States Brewers Foundation to promote high standards of operation in Nebraska. A A Whitworth USAF state director will lead, with Harold M Culpepper arranging.
