Cheyenne County agents Ivan Liljegren and Violet Shepherd report rising 4-H participation at the 1952 Cheyenne County Fair. More baby beeves and livestock entries, increased Style Show entries by girls, and growing FFA interest are noted. Merchants offer trophies for top livestock and dairy cattle shows.
Superintendents for the women’s divisions will gather at 1 30 Thursday afternoon at Miss Violet Shepherd’s home to finalize plans for the women’s work at the fair and to prepare entry and judges books.
The 1952 Cheyenne County Fair will award a poultry division prize trophy donated by Sidney's Produce. The Wheat Show seeks more junior farmer entries while officials warn competition is stiff due to other year round festivities and legal limits on carnivals. Despite challenges, strong 4-H and Hereford entries, notable vaudeville, stock car racing, and farmer networking are highlights as housewives and gardeners are urged to bring canned goods and produce for judging.
A twelve inch trophy will be offered for the best pen of young poultry at the 1952 Cheyenne County Fair. The trophy is presented by Sidney Produce Houses and Farmers Produce Co. Birds must be hatched after January 1. A pen is one cockerel and three pullets. Open to any Cheyenne County breeder.
The County Commissioners meet today to review final estimates and figures before approving the budget and levy for the year ending next June 30.
Official figures from Scottsbluff weather station indicate Sidney averaged 72.3 F in July, 2.3 F below normal, with only one day at 101 F. Chadron reached 109 F. Precipitation was 0.83 inches vs 1.79 inches normal. Frost observed July 8 in North Platte valley. scattered hail and tornadic winds noted in southern areas.
Twelve more tracts of Cheyenne County school land go on the block today and Wednesday at the courthouse with 9 30 and 1 30 sales. The wind up auctions, run by the State Board of Educational Lands and Funds, draw big crowds after harvest.
The Sidney Methodist Church launches a $125 000 Religious Education Building fund drive starting September 8 under Wells Fund-Raising Organization. Campaign aims to raise pledges over 150 weeks, with construction starting after campaign success to expand religious education and social activities.
Cooler weather prevailed in the Sidney area over the weekend with a high of 92 Saturday and 85 Sunday. A Saturday afternoon shower dropped .15 inches of moisture, easing a long dry spell while heavier rain south of town revived summer-fallow fields before wheat planting. No hail was reported in the county and a clear, warm week followed with possible southern Panhandle thunder showers.
The June 15-July 15 period saw a livestock driven rise in Nebraska prices received by farmers with the livestock index up six points and the overall index at 322 percent of the 1910-14 base. Hog prices averaged 19.50 per hundredweight and cattle 28.30, while calves and sheep fell. Wheat declined 11 cents a bushel to 1.92, grain index dropped, and poultry and eggs rose, with butterfat at 70 cents and milk at 4 per hundredweight.
Old Settlers Day at Lodgepole on Labor Day features a parade, baseball, free acts, a speaker, Country Store, carnival, and a big evening dance at the Legion Hall. Crowned King and Queen will be honored from previous registrants with prizes in parade and show categories. The Curl Carnival Co. provides rides, Lodgepole Band supplies music, Wheel Pitman Co. handles free acts, and A. J. Lindley leads secretary duties.
The municipal swimming pool probably will close around August 15 with efforts to stay open longer if enough staff can be retained to operate it.
The Woods No 1 wildcat near Sidney, already a gas producer, will be deepened to core and test the Lakota sands. Drilling continued Monday below 4 964 feet amid mechanical delays. A 54 foot gas saturated Dakota sand section was found, raising hopes for a major gas production and potential Lakota oil discovery if successful.
Forty four Sidney firms sponsor the first of two shop in Sidney advertisements aimed at residents of the Sidney trade territory. The ads highlight merchandise selection service and value offered with a second ad set for August 19. Prepared by Laverne Anthony and backed by the Chamber of Commerce retail committee.
A Sales Management survey finds Sidney families earned a net 1951 income of 10.039 million dollars across 1500 families averaging 6693 dollars per family, above national and regional figures. Sidney retail sales reached 12.187 million, with a quality of market index of 150 versus the U.S. average.
Cheyenne County ranks twenty fifth in Nebraska and second in the Panhandle for defense bond purchases in the first six months of 1952. Total Nebraska sales reached 37 million dollars, with Series E and Fr accounting for 73 percent. State director Leland Halli noted an 8.5 percent rise from 1951 and explained investor preference for safety and guaranteed return.
The Dalton Fall Festival is set for Monday and Tuesday September 15 and 16. Ray Graff, festival chairman, called a committee meeting to finalize arrangements. The two day program includes a parade exhibits ball game carnival the Queen and attendants introduction and a dance.
Marius Christensen has taken over as secretary treasurer of The Sidney Federal Savings and Loan Association. He succeeds Leslie Neubauer, who held the post since 1921 and announced his resignation effective August 1. Christensen resigned his VP post at The American National Bank to assume the new role.
Parcel post weight limits for surface and air mail to the American British and French zones in Germany, including Berlin sectors, increase from 22 to 44 pounds. The 22 pound limit remains in effect for addresses in the Soviet Zone of Germany and the Soviet sector of Berlin.
The C. A. Story Agency plans to build one hundred low cost dwellings on the north side under the Defense Housing Act. Most units will be in the Indian Hills subdivision near 21st Avenue and Elm Street. Purchasers must be SOD employees, World War II or Korean War veterans, with a $450 down payment and $8 000 two bedroom price. The three quarter million dollar project is a major Sidney housing effort and FHA notes other contractors showed interest in the remaining allotment.
The total value of building permits issued in Sidney since January toped $1,118,250, per City Clerk Gordon Tobin. Nearly all permits involve residential construction as no large projects began in 1952, though a new hotel and other jobs may push this total toward two million quickly.
The Defense Housing Agency backs the Story organization to build ten houses plus ninety more for sale in a new subdivision near the ordnance depot. FHA director Holger Holm supported the move to protect the project from forfeiture, noting two thousand depot employees and no current cutbacks. Western Construction Co adds ten more units in Country Club Heights, reaching about 125 homes.
E. L. Canaday plans a residential subdivision on a north hill strip between Tenth and Eleventh Avenues. The site, eyed for years for north side housing, borders city water towers and offers a view of the community. Access is via Eleventh Avenue or the east farm to market route. Platting and utility plans will follow as development begins.
