Panhandle Wheat Harvest Tops Twenty Million Bushels

Nebraskas Panhandle eleven counties finish a record wheat harvest totaling about 20 million bushels, about a fourth of the state yield. Average yields run 35 to over 45 bushels per acre with Cheyenne County leading at roughly 45. Quality is high, protein tests favorable, though market prices remain damp.

Chamber Board Hears Core Test Work Near Potter

The Cheyenne County Chamber of Commerce board heard that soil cores near Potter were drilled to assess if the soil type suits Interstate lake fill near Lodgepole Creek. About 20 holes were planned after initial cores showed variation. a favorable last core offered hope for a natural lake if gravel content is acceptable.

Bankers association has not issued definite recommendations on which days banks should close when holidays fall on a Saturday. County policy reportedly would ignore Saturday holidays for additional time off or pay for county employees.

Fair Board Funds Booth Supports Jacobs Medical Fund

The Fair Board donates a booth at the fair to the Chamber to collect funds for the Jacobs Medical Fund. Mrs Keith Spiker volunteers to run the booth with help from the Ladies Division. Booth hours run from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday through Tuesday, with all funds handed to Potter State Bank.

Outstanding County Fair Opens Amid Oil Field Activity

The 1970 Cheyenne County Fair begins with busy entries and a full schedule. 4-H horse show judging and art exhibit space highlight Saturday activities while open class livestock, cutting horse contests, and a free barbecue underscore the weekend. Space Age Carnival operates throughout with noon to evening exhibits and a Little Jimmy Dickens grandstand show slated for Tuesday closing.

Eugene B Foster 71 a longtime Cheyenne County resident died Tuesday in Phoenix where he lived the past two years Funeral services were held in Phoenix today Graveside rites Saturday at Greenwood Cemetery at 11 a m with Rev Harlan Brei of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church officiating The Gehrig and Son Funeral Home handled arrangements He was born November 11 1898 in Honeywell Kansas and spent most of his life in Dalton and Sidney areas He married Sophia Folkers August 18 1918 in Sterling Colorado She died September 4 1967 and he moved to Phoenix soon after He is survived by three sons Col Ret Foster of Phoenix Max of Lambida California and Robert of Manhattan Kansas and 13 grandchildren

Ray Johnson Rites Held In Julesburg

Ray C. Johnson 81 died July 31 at Sedgwick County Nursing Home Julesburg Colo where he had lived recently. He was born Nov 26 1888 in Julesburg and attended local schools. A WWI veteran he worked as rural mail carrier and later ran a tobacco and sundries business. Survived by widow Armenta of Sidney and several nieces and nephews. services and interment in Julesburg.

NFO Chooses Oshkosh As New Headquarters

The National Farmers Organization selects Oshkosh as the Scottsbluff area office site covering Columbus west to the Wyoming line. Ed Tordy leads the marketing area from Lewellen while the office sits near Main Street Avenue D. The move, from Torrington, aims to coordinate livestock and grain flows and help members and non members obtain higher prices. A North Platte district meeting occurred last week with local representatives. Further details on the Oshkosh office will follow.

Fossil Find Declared Largest on Interstate 80 Site

Lincoln The Department of Roads said the Lodgepole dig on Interstate 80 yielded the biggest fossil find to date. So far 50 giant land tortoises mastodon tusks an ancient horse tooths and the skeleton of a carnivore have been recovered since July 21 by graders paleontologists and four University of Nebraska students.

Embezzlement Charge Filed Against Forell

Orville Forell faces embezzlement charges for allegedly stealing more than 15600 from Chappell Livestock Commission Company. The complaint was filed with Devel County Judge, a warrant issued, Forell a longtime bookkeeper, co-owners named Michie Martin and Newberg, whereabouts unknown per the Chappell Register.

Family Shower Slated For Explosion Victims

A community shower to aid the Clif Houk family who lost their home and possessions in a farm house explosion will be held Tuesday Aug 11 at 8 p.m. in the Gurley fire hall hosted by Mrs. Ron Tremain and Mrs. Robert Kuehn.
