Gering officials report the Oregon Trail Days association paid $2,000 for 30 acres south of town to serve as a park and event site including baseball, circuses and rodeos. The area once housed the Oregon Trail market among other developments.
Sidney city council approved Aubrey T. Haines 913 Illinois Street beer license by a four to two vote, sending the application to the state liquor commission. Hellwig and Mahr opposed. If Cobb mandamus action succeeds, Lottie Cobb could operate Log Cabin Tavern at 1034 Illinois St. and the city may have five licenses.
Assessed values of goods and merchandise in Nebraska stores rose 16 percent, increasing by 7,466,285 to 53,273,054. Office and store fixtures climbed 38 percent to 2,649,035 and 31 percent to 4,250,733 for store fixtures, with other business equipment at 11,630,333 up 31 percent. Hotel and lodging equipment surged 160 percent to 1,142,142. Farm property fell, corn value 50,039,000 to 24,922,000 and livestock down, leaving total personal property valuation dropping from 422,502,955 to 400,176,346.
A large stubble fire southeast of Sidney lit up the sky Wednesday night and was visible from Scottsbluff. From country club hill, the glow was distinct with flames seen. Officials at the Sioux Ordnance depot denied burning powder that night, noting surplus powder had burned earlier but the fire ended before sundown.
The Telegraph prints its annual county fair booster edition this week with the first full fair since before the war. Due to newsprint shortages, advertisers must reserve space by Wednesday afternoon and call No 17 to ensure inclusion. The edition will feature complete premium lists, county fair program details, and a summary of 4-H and junior farm work with photos of activities and personalities involved.
The Spearow Equipment Co at 1412 10th Avenue showcases International Harvester farm machinery including tractors, combines, plows and dairy equipment. The firm, tracing roots to 1912, operates a repair shop with a 10,000-part inventory worth over 25,000 dollars and stocks Goodyear tires. Plans include power units and refrigeration for commercial and household use.
J K Mahr general foreman of the Union Pacific railroad received an Ak-Sar-Ben award at a Rotary Club meeting. The plaque honored Cheyenne County outstanding scrap salvage work during the war. Dr R B Roche sent the award and praised community cooperation. Rae Jones spoke on a Rotary dinner in Torrington.
The fifth annual national band camp, sponsored by the Elks lodges of Alliance, Chadron and Scottsbluff, will run August 11 to 18 at Chadron state park. Co-director Roy Peterson reports over 100 students from six states registered. Guest conductor Robert L. Landers leads a 100-piece band on August 16 in Chadron. Quinn Lotspeich and an array of instructors from Omaha to Norfolk participate.
Business men from outlying communities back a calf scramble fund for the county fair and ten splendid calves for 4-H participants. Sidney solicitors Gordon Tobin and George Barlow will canvass, while fair board members prepare plans for August 13 to 16 with entry day on the 13th. Exhibits must be in by 2 p.m. that day, and a large school exhibit is planned along with a locally supported junior farm and home economics show. Sidney stores to close each afternoon during the fair.
Research specialists in potato diseases breeding and development will meet in Scottsbluff August 16 and 17 for the annual High Plains Potato Conference. Attendees include horticulturalists plant pathologists and entomologists from Wyoming Colorado and Nebraska along with University of Nebraska officials.
Mayor C. B. Dorwart instructed the street department to obtain DDT solution and spray alleys and thoroughfares where garbage and refuse collects. He said the solution clings to receptacles and helps curb fly hatching after rains.
The county fair merchants building offers twenty booths to display merchandise. P W Barker and Ray Babcock lead the effort with a nominal rental to cover policing and cleanup. Firms are urged to contact Barker or Babcock promptly to reserve a space.
Nebraska reports show twenty eight counties with infantile paralysis through July, with Douglas and Dawes most affected. The outbreak began earlier than usual, with 78 cases by Sunday and a yearly total of 120, ranks of prior years cited. Dr. W S Petty notes weather affected harvests while polio seasons shifted earlier than typical.
The chamber of commerce will form a special committee to inventory current Christmas lighting and street decorations and plan for additional materials for the 1946 season. Quotas have been received from evergreen trimming firms, and the civic club board seeks permanent lighting fixtures. The committee will study materials and consult the utility office on energy availability for expansion.
The city water supply received a clean bill of health from the state health department after six samples, three from wells and three from outlets, tested negative. Utility Manager Verne Livingston said ongoing checks will continue and chlorine dispensers may be purchased for immediate use if needed. He noted recent pollution concerns likely stemmed from sample handling or cleaning solutions in water line coils.
State patrols have kept the county clerk busy as drivers face penalties. Frank Johnson of Chappell paid a 25 dollar fine and had his license revoked for 90 days after reckless driving in Lodgepole. Edwin G. Foglesong paid 10 dollars and costs for reckless driving. Raymond V. McMinn and Dale E. Barton faced charges, with McMinn fined 25 dollars and costs and Barton awaiting hearing. Gordon Vernon was fined one dollar for driving without a license. Nebraska traffic deaths rose to 22 in July, with panhandle counties and Scotts Bluff among those affected. For the year to date, 135 deaths mark an increase over last year. Other court cases included Ben A. Garvey’s intoxication case, Emil H. Teske’s liquor-to-an-Indian charge, and Andrew F. Solomon’s related fine.
One of the region's largest land sales is set for Thursday August 15 at the court house. The Daniel Herboldsheimer estate offers extensive holdings at death with Martin and Davis as heirs attorneys and R P Kepler named referee. Terms require 15 percent cash on sale day and the balance on confirmation. Abstracts will be available for all lands except the Potter village property.
North Platte plans a Canteen Day celebration to honor 125 towns that helped run the North Platte Canteen during the war. Invitations go to Cheyenne County towns to send representatives and participate in a parade with about 200 floats bands and novel entries.
Mr and Mrs Merle Green and daughter Peggy of Corvallis Oregon stayed with Mr and Mrs R P Kepler while en route to their former home in Iowa. They spent yesterday in Scottsbluff and returned to Sidney, leaving for Iowa this morning. Green was an athletic instructor at Sidney high school in the early 1920s and helped produce notable teams. Mrs Green also taught at the high school.
A Texas and a Canada bound combine unit and a California tourist car were in a freak collision ten miles east of Sidney. The eastbound combines side swept and broke a cutter casting into the California windshield. Several occupants received minor cuts and scratches and were treated in Sidney before continuing their trip.
Ed Grupe of Scottsbluff as chief engineer will oversee paving curb and gutter and storm sewer planning in Sidney assisted by James Hazelwood. Grupe to be paid five percent of street and seven percent of storm sewer costs, with credits for Hazelwood’s prior payments. Four paving districts under study, specifications due to council by Wednesday. No remonstrance filed against districts 15 and 16. 13 and 14 already completed. Drainage work aims to curb downtown floodwater and sewer overloads this year.
A quarter of an inch of rain fell in Sidney Saturday evening, breaking the heat spell briefly as showers extended over two hours. The storm covered scattered county areas with Potter receiving about two inches of moisture and a severe hail that could have damaged substantial wheat if it had come earlier.
Funeral services were held at Scottsbluff for Daniel E. Ayres 71 father of Wayne Ayres a Sidney businessman He died at his Scottsbluff home Friday Surviving are two sons and fourteen grandchildren Born September 7 1874 at Macelway Fort Pa he was a charter member of Scottsbluff volunteer fire department active until 1942 He moved to Scottsbluff in 1911 and worked as a carpenter and contractor.
Editor Tom Lally of The Bridgeport News Blade advocates advertising after setbacks. He placed a classified notice seeking two inches of rain within three days for Nebraska especially Morrill County. He prefers steady rain over gully washers.
Cheyenne County completes a rich 1946 wheat harvest but moving the grain to storage and shipping facilities remains a major task. Railroads strain to direct cars to the Nebraska panhandle amid a dwindling Sioux Ordnance Depot supply, raising fears of price drops though grain men expect strong world demand to absorb the bumper crop. Irrigated crops face a dry start to fall planting while dryland fields need soaking rains. grasshoppers continue to threaten feed crops, pastures, and corn. The region posts six straight bumper years with strong farm finances as crops are marketed and stored.
The U S Civil Service announces applications for probational Substitute Clerk and Substitute Carrier posts in Sidney Post Office. Pay starts at $1.04 hourly. US citizens only, ages 18 to 50, with veterans and certain federal service exceptions. Obtain forms at Sidney post office or the St Paul regional office. Applications due by August 19, 1946.
