Lincoln Neb Aug 3 1898 A letter from the Internal Revenue collector at Omaha replies to a query noting no need for revenue stamps on teachers certificates orders by the director annual reports or a teacher contract The opinion states stamps are not required on census reports but are required on district treasurers bonds filed with the county clerk
A historical notice records the purchase of a suit of clothes by H. T. Doran, indicating a transactional item in a local commerce entry.
Delegates from Camp Clarke to Union Valley gather at the Court House for a Republican county convention. Henry E. Gapen is nominated by acclamation for county attorney as the convention endorses a unity slate and names delegates, precinct chairs, and alternates for state senate and representative conventions. The meeting adjourns after electing officers and approving credentials.
From the lagoon to the Administration Arch the Exposition’s grounds unfold a prime cluster of buildings. The Government dome houses Liberty and an electric torch while Neptune crowns the fountain. Across the water the Agricultural and Fine Arts halls sit beside the Manufacturers block with exhibits and samples. A grand approach features the Arch of States and a sweeping view of the grounds.

Coroner Bassett was summoned by Joan Adams to a ranch scene after Andrew Hickman, a 36 year old single rancher from the Sidney draw, was fatally entangled by a water wheel shaft he designed. He was knocked unconscious and died of a broken neck. The funeral will be held at Christ Episcopal church.
On July 29 the millinery and grocery stores belonging to M A Chowins & Son were voluntarily assigned and their contents turned over to the sheriff for creditor benefit. A notice posted by Sheriff F H King states the property in the store building is in possession of the assignee.
The Hall Teneers and Lodgepole clashed in a spirited game at Lodgepole, Sidney prevailing 26 to 19 behind Tobin and Davis. Attendance was strong as funds from uniforms and club materials go toward the Sidney nine. A grand ball at the Skating Rink in Sidney on August 10th, with Jas. V. Klein's four-piece orchestra, will follow an afternoon game against the railroad men.

Prof W R Siders spoke on Natural Philosophy to teachers and attendees at the schoolhouse. Dr F P Ford and wife toured Omaha and Yellow stone after weeks in San Francisco. Wake Island annexation news stirs headlines as the second expedition moves toward Manila. Sidney gardens show green as rains ease freight and celery beds mature. Fred Griffith celebrates his 29th birthday with coworkers and a surprise office chair as friends gather for cake and photos.
A small group of self described Democrats met in the city last Saturday and elected delegates R. P. Scott A. W. Atkins Jos. Oberfelder and Dan McAleese to the state convention. They endorsed Felts and favored fusion with populists. A populist convention followed at Odd Fellows hall naming delegates for the state convention. A county official race meeting is set for Redington on September 10.
