Super Highways Plan Outlined for U S Route 30 Corridor
U S highway department officials in Washington announced a master plan for a national super highway network. Nebraska’s only east west link would parallel No 30 through Sidney with a coast to coast four lane road connecting Omaha Lincoln North Platte Cheyenne and a Denver branch from Devel county. Completion could span 15 to 20 years due to costs and material shortages. The 1944 federal aid act provides 500 million annually for three years after the war with 225 million for regular U S highways 125 million for urban areas and 90 million for state farm to market roads. Design standards call for concrete or asphalt paving four lane divided highways where traffic is heavy or add lanes later, 250 foot right of way in rural areas, 12 foot lanes, grade crossing elimination where density is high, and controlled access near cities.
