Tragic Potters Grain Bin Death of Two Year Old
Two year old Richard Carlson, son of Mr and Mrs Fred Carlson, Potter farmers, suffocated in a grain loading chute at the Carlson farm northeast of Potter. Despite over two hours of artificial respiration by Dr Hull Cook and Sidney fire department first aid squad, the child died from lung and throat blockage and pressure in the chute. The boy was found with a leg protruding from the chute after the grain had to be cleared away. the rescue effort revealed the child had been buried under grain for about twenty five minutes. Funeral arrangements were made at The Craig Home for Funerals.

Foland Loses Part Of Leg In Farm Machinery Accident
Foland head of The Fol and Farm Machinery Co. lost part of his left leg when his leg slipped into a combine cylinder on the William Schuler farm seven miles east of Dalton. He was trapped about three hours before rescue and taken to Dalton Hospital where amputation was performed. Dr. J B Pankau reported his condition as good for the time. Rae Jones of Minneapolis Moline aided in the rescue and witnesses praised Foland for his bravery.

High School Credit For Vets Announced
Procedures for issuing certificates of high school equivalency to Nebraska veterans were outlined by State Superintendent Wayne C. Reed. Veterans unable to qualify for a diploma in the visual manner may apply through a local superintendent or high school principal to take the Armed Forces Institute general information test. The test will be offered at the Statehouse and in Omaha, Lincoln, Grand Island, Alliance, North Platte, and Norfolk through local schools. Certificates, authorized by a recent legislature bill, would equal diplomas but only for ex servicemen. Otto G. Ruff said non veterans cannot receive certificates. Ruff noted 20 applications were awaiting review and predicted rising demand before September as veterans seek college enrollment.

Field Station Visit Set For Mid August
Final plans for a field day for Nebraska extension workers and interested farmers at the Horticultural Field Station in Cheyenne Wyoming on August 15 were announced by Extension Forester Earl G Maxwell of the University of Nebraska. The tour, held annually, invites Nebraskans to learn about experimental work. The Cheyenne Station serves parts of Wyoming Colorado Kansas and Nebraska and was established about 17 years ago.

Combines Are Road Menace On Rural Highways
Two harvest-time combine accidents near Sidney were reported by the sheriff.
