Flash flood nightmare in Estes Park canyon escape

The Herrera family Jerry Julie and their daughters Francine and Kimberly rode out Colorado's Big Thompson flood after a day in Estes Park. They sheltered with Fort Collins residents Leonard and Dorothy Hadenfeldt in a cabin above the road as floodwaters rose, then endured hours of darkness and high water before evacuation by helicopter and army transport.

Cheyenne County Hikes Tax Request 24 Percent for 1976-77

The Cheyenne County commissioners approve a 1976-77 budget totaling 2 191 063 with 1 119 25 26 in tax revenue from 543 910 county levy 366 350 state and 208 865 federal sources. A public hearing to discuss the plan is set for next Wednesday at 9 am. The levy cannot exceed 14 28 mills, with actual rates projected to rise and reserves and miscellaneous funds shaping the total. Institutional items include road fund 999 595 and a 204 790 miscellaneous fund covering court costs publishing fees reappraisal insurance and more. A deputy sheriff and juvenile fund allocations also feature in the plan while federal funds will underwrite the deputy for the first year.

Pony Express race threads through Develand and Bayard area

A 2000 mile Pony Express derby travels from St Joseph to Sacramento with 12 riders from diverse nations. Four Californians ride Icelandic ponies. foreign entrants include Germany, Switzerland, Canada and Iceland.
