Big Thompson flood death toll rises in Colorado canyon

Survivors sheltered on mountainsides as rains delayed air rescues after a weekend flash flood killed about 60 people with dozens more feared dead. Officials said power, helicopters, and ground teams searched the Big Thompson Canyon near Estes Park, while federal disaster aid was sought.

Three named officials assume new posts in Sidney

Showers Bring Joy and Setback in Panhandle Wheat

Weekend showers across the Panhandle of Nebraska brought relief to pastures and hay while halting some wheat cutting in Dawes and Box Butte counties. Rain totals varied, with Alliance at 1.03 inches and Sidney around 0.8 inches, affecting July moisture and July totals. Some fields yielded up to 50 bushels per acre, but harvesting halted on several promising plots, with wetter pockets and drier table lands noted.

Nebraska Sees Light Showers With Warmer Week Ahead

National Weather Service reports light showers over most of Nebraska with North Platte recording up to 0.60 inch. Forecasters expect more rain or thundershowers in the west, decreasing clouds eastward. Tonight and Tuesday, partly cloudy skies with lows in the mid 60s west to the lower 60s east, daytime highs in the 70s and 80s.

Rescue Efforts Underway After 1962 Canyon Flood

National Guardsmen sheriff's deputies and search teams conduct airlifted rescues and ground evacuations in a canyon after heavy rain and floodwaters. Forty guardsmen landed to deliver food water and medical aid as officials report slow victim identification at an old hospital. One identified victim is W Hugh Purdy 53 a state patrol veteran. Survivors are housed at a nearby high school.

Sidney firemen win tourney and keep practice with runs

The Sidney Volunteer Firemen captured the North Platte Valley Firemen's Association Water Tournament title on Sunday and used nearby fires for practice. They scored 11 pots, placed second in the 50-foot event, and Dalton finished second overall with nine points. Sidney had runs Friday and early today including a grass fire west of Brownson and a dramatic oil tank battery blaze four miles north of Sidney.
