Winter wheat varieties tested at Nebraska station
In 1896 37 winter wheat varieties were sown. only Turkey Red, Big Frame and Currell survived. By 1899 over 100 varieties were trialed with only five surviving, including those three. Last fall 42 varieties were planted. seven failed to germinate and nineteen winter killed. Nebraska grown seeds performed best. Turkey Red from Kansas and Currell from Maryland lagged. Nebraska aims to expand winter wheat cultivation, testing many strains. Seed of promising types will be mailed free of charge to northern and western farmers while supplies last.
