Jim Cummings Well Tragedy Becomes Heroic Tale of Survival
In 1885 at Cummings Park Nebraska, Jim Cummings was buried alive in a 210 foot well after a cave-in. Neighbors, led by well man Garlock, labored through two dawns to free him, finding him conscious but feet trapped under the curb. Despite rescue efforts, Cummings died four days later, a symbol of prairie peril and frontier grit. Betty Bush of Detroit is noted as a golf professional for Cavaliers Yacht and Country Club.
