The Bushnell Lions Club marks its tenth anniversary with a dinner and program at Bushnell High School starting at 7 p.m. Wayne Norman of LaSalle, Colo., a former international Lions director, will be guest speaker. Ish Schmidt of Scottsbluff will serve as toastmaster.
The Union Pacific Challenger, popular with western Nebraskans, made its final Sidney run at 1:06 a.m. as the railroad merges it with the City of Los Angeles. Regular passenger trains drop from five to four, leaving three streamliners and the San Francisco Overland. Revenue riders may still use the UP mail trains, though not advertised on schedules. The Challenger began service after World War I, with a prior similarly named train removed before the war.
The FBI has taken jurisdiction in the case against Merlyn Wynia an 18 year old airman. Wynia was taken into custody at Lodgepole driving a car stolen in Cheyenne and was absent without leave from Warren AFB. He remained in Cheyenne County Jail awaiting federal arrival. He faces potential Dyer Act charges for transporting a stolen vehicle across state lines.
Don DePriest of Sidney and John Goffe of Cody Wyoming will soon depart for Libya to join exploration staff led by W L Jack Frost. The assignment places all families in Tripoli during the Libyan posting and follows Frost’s early April move to Libya.
The Alliance Chamber of Commerce sponsors a mobile home show on May 11 and 12. As part of the advertising campaign, 25,000 leaflets will be dropped on western Nebraska communities this Friday with Sidney among the drop points.
Fossils including a prehistoric horse and giant rhino were turned over to the Cheyenne County Historical Association after an unauthorized dig near Sidney. The unnamed digger said he did not realize scientists were uncovering the bones. Nebraska geologists note the Sidney site fills a long missing data zone. Ohio Oil Co fences the area to halt further digging while Dr. C B Schulz and University of Nebraska State Museum researchers plan further work.
Three IFYE youths from Egypt Jordan and Iran arrived in Lincoln to begin a Nebraska tour through July 26 visiting Richardson Cheyenne and Morrill Counties. They will tour downtown Lincoln College of Agriculture campus and attend a noon luncheon before heading to Richardson County for a stay until June 11. The program is backed by the National 4 H Club Foundation and Cooperative Extension Service to foster cross cultural rural understanding.
The Telegraph explains readers may see three four or five sections of four or six pages due to scarce newsprint supply. Rolls come in four six and eight page sizes and odd lots are used to balance stock. Expect no improvement in newsprint until mid-1957.
Wilfred T Bill Semrad will join the Nebraska State Education Association as the western field man effective July 15. He will head field service to local associations in the western state region, moving from Schuyler to a western area likely Bridgeport or Ogallala. Semrad currently serves as Colfax County superintendent and holds degrees from the University of Nebraska. He has taught at rural, junior high, and high schools and previously led Clarkson public schools before becoming Colfax County Superintendent in 1950. He is a former president of the Colfax County Education Association and the Mid-State Conference.
A Friday night storm brought 0.89 inch moisture to Sidney with lightning damage to rural lines. The rain and sleet eased April dryness, aiding winter wheat as crop observers report effective worm control and higher soil moisture across parts of western Nebraska and northeastern Colorado.
A wet spell ends drought in Peetz Colorado aiding the wheat crop. Rainfall around 1.25 inches helps soil and plants and reduces a serious cutworm infestation across the area.
The Board of directors of the Ohio Oil Co has declared a dividend of 40 cents per share payable June 9 to shareholders of record at close of business May 11.
A survey tied to Sidney’s bid for airline service lists nearly 3,500 workers in the city and Sioux Ordnance Depot, with SOD at about 1,200. Other large employers include Union Pacific, Ohio Oil Co, Northwestern Bell, Rogers Truck Lines, schools, government, hospital, and local contractors. The 1954 Sidney business activity exceeds 35 million dollars, and 69 million in the trade territory. The Census of Business provides figures, with bid materials due to Washington by May 19.
Sidney and Cheyenne County residents are urged to display American flags on Loyalty Day Tuesday per VFW Commander Simmons Cook Jr. The drive links to Memorial and Independence Day, cites national recognition, and urges businesses to honor the flag with sidewalk displays or hanging banners.
Sidney Chamber of Commerce manager M R Sigler announced an unemployment insurance informational tax meeting for employers with one or more employees. Lincoln Division of Employment Security representatives will explain the State Unemployment Insurance Law at 7 30 p m on Wednesday May 9 in the City Auditorium.
Deputy State Engineer Henry Schlitt says the announced federal aid for Nebraska totals 13 921 571 dollars for the new fiscal year and is similar to last year. The breakdown allocates 6 127 828 for primary roads 4 364 876 for secondary 1 017 210 for urban highways and 2 429 657 for the interstate system.
The Nebraska Citizens Council reports Nebraskas state government spending is comparatively economical in a survey of Nebraska and six neighboring states. The study notes lower overall government spending and very low state tax collections compared with neighbors, while some states may offer more services per dollar.
Oilmen in Cheyenne County announce two new producers southwest and west of Sidney. Shannon Oil Co.’s State 519 No 2 in Rudolph Field shows 12 feet saturation in the D sand.
