Oil Potential Cited for Southwest Nebraska by Geologist

April Equity Term Opens in Cheyenne County Court

District Judge I J Nisley opened the April equity term in Cheyenne County District Court. The Backers of Gering sought ten thousand dollars from the City of Sidney for alleged property damage from the 13th Ave underpass. the motion for a new trial was overruled and no recovery awarded. A separate judgment of seven thousand two hundred forty seven dollars and thirty cents against U S Fidelity and Guaranty Co. was dismissed upon plaintiff’s motion.

Car Truck Collision Causes Major Damage North of Sidney

Nebraska Patrol estimated over 350 dollars in damage after a dump truck driven by Walter Hrbek backed into a 1956 car driven by Mrs. Robert Rauner on Highway 19, five and a half miles north of Sidney. The car suffered major damage in the Saturday mishap.

Mrs. William Journey 78, formerly of Gurley, died Saturday afternoon in a Portsmouth Ohio hospital after years of ill health. She had lived with her son William Jr in Luthersville Ohio and farmed near Gurley and Cheyenne County before relocating about 30 years ago. Mr Journey died in 1947.

Poppy Drive Set by American Legion Auxiliary

Grain Stocks Down In State April 1 1957 Nebraska Report

Nebraska grain stocks as of April 1 fell versus a year earlier. Wheat total 91.981 million bushels down five percent. corn 158.825 million up eight percent. Farm wheat and corn stocks declined while off farm wheat rose, oats fell 58 percent, rye dropped to 468 thousand, barley 1.075 million, and grain sorghum 4.261 million with no prior year estimate.

Sidney Airport runway upgrade cleared by city and state authorities

The Sidney Municipal Airport runway expansion from 2,800 by 50 feet to 4,500 by 100 feet gains approval from both the City of Sidney and the Nebraska State Aeronautics Commission and is now with the Civil Aeronautics Administration for a final decision next month. Estimated cost is 200 000 dollars with 100 000 federal support likely and 35 000 state funding plus up to 65 000 from the city. The project aims to attract daily commercial airline service, as Sidney bids for normal operations.

Saab Wins City Road-E-O Teen Driving Event

Lawrence Saab led with 422 points in the written exam and driving tests to win the Teen-Age Road-E-O at Sidney High School amid rain and wind. SHS senior Saali placed high in driving, with Dean Meyer and Don Thomas finishing second and third. Saab earns a plaque and a trip to Red Cloud for the state event June 8 8. Rocky Mountain Oil District Elects Leaders at Casper

George Goodin of Casper was elected president of the Rocky Mountain District of the American Petroleum Institute. L. A. Lindstrom of Ohio Oil Co. was named vice-chairman for Nebraska. About 800 oil men attended the three day meeting in Casper to discuss future domestic crude needs and production, with D. L. Connelly of Warren Petroleum stressing high prices and ample allowables.

Brothers Engberg given two year prison terms each

Freddie and Roy Engberg were each sentenced to two years in the Nebraska State Penitentiary after pleading guilty to forgery. The men were caught after a stalled car in a snow bank south of Sidney led to their arrest during March storms. Judge I J Nisley ordered the terms as authorities had been alerted.
