Rumors circulate in eastern Nebraska of a last minute petition campaign to put highway tax increases on the ballot next November. Proposals for a one cent gas tax hike and higher motor vehicle registration fees were defeated in 1950 but are being reconsidered by groups like the Better Nebraska Association and Highway 183. The Nebraska Farm Bureau Federation cautions that public disclosure is needed and that some revenue measures deserve scrutiny. The Legislature has asked a committee to study highway taxation with a potential highway commission proposed to map long term road work.

Sidney Lions plant trees to beautify city entrances
Thirty five Sid ney Lions Club members spent a day planting 300 trees to beautify city entrances east and south of Sidney. They set 100 Red Cedar 100 Pines and 100 broadleafs in two alternating rows near the east overpass and Highway 19 south of Sidney. Ralph Thompson president notes the project as a key community effort and plans to continue next year.

Two Arrests After Sunday Accidents In Cheyenne County
Two men were arrested after a Sunday accident near 18th and Dodge. A. J. Kinnersley Jr. faces charges of driving while intoxicated and hit and run, with Lloyd Deal charged with intoxication. They drove Deal’s Plymouth and struck a parked truck owned by Robert Johnson, then fled. Damages listed as $50 on the struck vehicle. total damage to the Plymouth not yet estimated.
