Sidney High Maroons head to Alliance to contest the Western Conference meet with Alliance as the favorite to repeat as champions. Key performers include Lingwall in multiple events and Benzel in sprints, with Kimball and Gering among challengers.
Ogallala defeated Sidney 72 to 60 at Weymouth Field in a tune up for the Western Conference Meet. Ron Fish set a new school two mile record with 10 37.1. Tim Smith led the shot put with 49 3, and Jim Benzel swept the sprints for Sidney.
The Sidney Junior Baseball Association reports strong overall registration for the 1967 season but a shortage of players in the 11 to 15 year old brackets may shrink teams. Les Couch warns missing slips could force cuts and notes returning players still must submit a new form. Registration sticks can be obtained from the Sidney Police Department or Sidney Schools as plans depend on completed slips.
Sidney's SHS freshmen football track team aims for a third straight Western Conference title at Alliance joining the varsity meet. Event leaders include John Curless in 100, Mike O Halloran in 220 and 440, Dan Shere ferd in the mile, Chuck Wait in multiple sprints and jumps, with Jim Holechek and Mike O Halloran anchoring field events.
The Chadron Eagle Boosters Club honored Chadron State College athletes at a Campus Center dinner. Coach Mack Peyton received District 11 NAIA Coach of the Year while Albert Henkel of Sidney earned a track certificate and Ken Ottoson of Potter received a basketball certificate. Ottoson was earlier named an all conference pitcher for the Eagles.
The Sidney American Legion Baseball Program reports 1966 costs at 2506.01 dollars with last year overrun of about 600 dollars. Funds come from the Legion co sponsors Kiwanis Club and Gibson Ford. Midgets play 24 games including a Fourth of July tournament at Alliance. Juniors 28 games plus Alliance, with a Kansas Oklahoma tour planned in July. Bob Casteel named mentor for both teams. 1967 season begins May 28 at Grant marking ten years of operation.
The Western Nebraska Sportsmen's Association will hold its next meeting at the Gering F O E Hall on Monday May 1 at 730 p m. Mr Schiel man state waterfowl biologist will address the group and a film titled Wild Heritage will be shown. The group will discuss a plan for developing a recreation area in the region.
