A forecast heavy moisture snow failed to materialize as a fast-moving low pressure system passed through the Panhandle producing only light showers. Wheat and crops show mixed moisture gains while pasture and feed shortages worry farmers. Nebraska milk and egg receipts rose slightly from 1954 while chicken numbers fell.
Wallace Savage of Gurley was fined $100 and costs in Cheyenne County Court for failing to stop a truck loaded with flammable liquids at a railroad crossing south of Dalton. He pleaded guilty citing a brake defect. Savage also paid $10 and costs for a stop sign violation. Nebraska Safety Patrol assisted.
40000 trees planted in Cheyenne County this spring with 25000 in rural windbreaks and 15000 in five wildlife refuges totaling 15 acres. McMullen credits 1956 as a peak year for soil conservation and notes state and national sources supplied the trees. Payments supported farmers under soil conservation rules.
Judges for the Miss Ft Sidney Pageant on Friday May 4 have been selected by Jaycee judging chair Lowry Lindell. The group includes Haven Smith Chappell Manny Kreader Dal ton Warren Wood Gering Art Lally Bridgeport and Don Porter Sidney. Nine contestants compete at the senior high school auditorium with five ballots for evening gown talent swimsuit intellect and personality.
Funeral services for six week old James Edward Buehrer will be held Saturday at 10:30 a.m. from the Craig Mortuary. He died yesterday in East St Louis H born March 15 in failing health since birth. Survived by Dale and Kathryn Buehrer and grandparents James Hazelwood Ed Buehrer. Rex Henry Monnich to conduct with burial at Greenwood Cemetery Family plot.
Allen Nelson of Potter was named chairman of a Cheyenne County brucellosis committee at a courthouse meeting Monday. Members include Bill Harms wale Talich Tom Allington Kenneth Larson Bob Elsen Ivan Liljegren Dr Jim Edwards and Ivan Walker. Ten thousand cattle are signed for vaccination, with calves aged four months to one year. another information meeting is planned for May.
Nebco Cable Tool Co. sues Flader Industries for 12310 over payment for work on the Barrett No 1 well in Kimball County. The case argues Nebco completed work while Flader contends it did not authorize completion. A 12-man jury trial was set to begin after three days of court activity and closing arguments.
Inland Construction Co will surface three paving districts in Sidney and build two earthen dams for the 13th Ave underpass. It was the low bidder over Missouri Valley Construction Bushman and A H Read. Work on paving starts in 30 days with 45 day completion and drainage start 30 days after signing.
Charles E Ham was elected president of the Sidney Lions Club at a regular dinner meeting at the Elks Club. Officers include Gene Lienemann secretary treasurer Glen Liebken first vice president and others. A Fort Sidney Days parade float was approved with a fishing derby planned for May 20 at Legion Park Lodgepole Creek.
The county assessor's office has levied penalties totaling 2810 dollars on 15 individuals for late personal property filings. Penalties apply to schedules filed after the April 20 deadline, with fifty percent penalties noted among those billed up to noon today.
Sidney City Council authorized bids for park concessions at Legion Park and approved a sewer line installation to the National Guard Armory at an estimated 2200 dollars. The body also granted a VFW post building permit variance and discussed alley setback issues along with a historic locomotive upkeep request. Additional actions included sewer assessments, rezoning north half of Lodgepole Creek Block 5, and a PTA letter about the 19th Ave overpass.
Sidney bankers and other Cheyenne County financiers will join Group Six Nebraska Bankers Association to meet in Alliance. The all day event features outstanding speakers and will close with an annual banquet. Resolutions committee members include A C Peterson of First State Bank Lodge Pole H A Dale of Stockmen's National Bank Rushville and Dale Sorenson of Gering National Bank Gering.
Services for laying the cornerstone of the new Holy Trinity Lutheran Church at 13th Ave and Lodgepole Rd will be Sunday at 3 pm. The old church on Tenth Ave hosts the opening rites before the cornerstone is placed. Guest speaker Rev Vernon Jacobs will attend from Alliance, with Rev Alex Wacker of Potter as liturgist. The 400-seat nave is built by Carl Christ Construction Co for about 175000 dollars, with completion expected early fall, ending 70 years in the old building dedicated December 7 1887.
Doyle Foland of Sidney will be installed as the Windy Plains District chairman at a 7 pm ceremony in the Sioux Ordnance Depot cafeteria. He succeeds Bill Schulz as district chairman after last meeting vote. about 75 to 100 people are expected at the annual session dinner. The Windy Plains District serves Cubs, Boy Scouts and Explorers from Bushnell to Big Springs, including Dalton and Gurley, under the Wyo-Braska Area Council with over 700 Scouts.
Sidney's winter yard trash collection on the North Side is proving prolific with crews expanding effort beyond initial three day plan. City Manager Murrey Fuller says loads are larger than anticipated and the schedule to progress southward may extend after northside completion.
The Cheyenne County Historical Association asked Union Pacific for an old steam locomotive. W. E. Henke, UP trainmaster in Sidney, will forward the request to Omaha officials. Sidney City Council agreed to maintain the steamer with regular paint upkeep every four to five years.
A progress report on the old engine project will be presented tonight in the Sidney Junior High School cafeteria as the Cheyenne County Historical Association holds its first organizational session. The meeting starts at 7 30 p m and all interested county residents are invited. Free refreshments will be offered.
Funds for the project likely come from the park department. The council backs obtaining a steam locomotive, with Inland Construction and Ready-Mixed Cement Co set to furnish a concrete slab. The old engine, possibly a 1900 400 class, would be loaded on the lawn for Ft. Sidney Days in mid June, with mounting by the historical association planned.
The 800 acre Treinen home place on the south table is to stay in the family. Auctioned Tuesday to settle the estate of the late Coxth Erine Treinen, John Treinen, son of the original owners, bid top on the total offer after four previous parcels failed to meet the price.
Nebraska oil output doubles over 18 months as Kimball County and Cheyenne County yield new fields. McMillen No. 2 in Rudolph Field shows 235 ft oil, 30 ft oil-cut mud, 90 ft water. Ohio Oil reports Flicker No 1 and Nicola No 6 yields. Colorado wildcat activity edges Nebraska in first quarter 1956.
