Marshall Larkins purchasing agent at Sioux Ordnance Depot is chosen to serve as Colonel for the Fort Sidney Days celebration, June 18 through 20, announced by depot commander Col L G Smoak. Larkins, a Bridgeport resident born in Charlotte Tennessee, has a long Nebraska career including work with Burlington, a clothing store, a farm, Continental Oil Co, and Sioux since 1943. He and Frances Hopkins of Bridgeport marked their 31st anniversary.
The Blood for Freedom Train will visit Sidney on Friday and Saturday May 15 and 16 under the Red Cross National Blood Program. Donors should register at Hardy-Clark furniture store on May 8 and 9 from 9 am to 5 pm to meet a two day quota of 250 donors. The drive supports military, Civil Defense, civilian needs and gamma globulin production for polio fight. Ages 18 to 59 eligible, minors 16 with parental consent may donate if physically fit.
Neeley School of Dance presents the fourth annual recital Monday at City Auditorium starting 8 p.m. The ultra modern theme divides the program into three channels Morning Channel I opens with Kids Theatre at 8 am Sports Hi Lights closes Channel I. Channel II offers Musical Moods Dancing Manor and Visiting Hawaii. Channel III features Valent Scouts and Serenade in Blues.
The Army said Monday that former Pvt. Leonard L. Conover of Sidney will be released on parole May 15 after serving more than one third of his sentence for killing an unidentified Korean in March 1951. He was convicted by an Army court martial of assault with intent to commit a felony and feloniously and unlawfully killing an unknown Korean male. The original six year sentence was issued, and Conover has been imprisoned at the Federal Reformatory in El Reno, Oklahoma. The Telegraph could not locate any relatives or family in Sidney or nearby areas.
City manager Virgil Knowles revealed plans for a twice weekly garbage pickup beginning around May first. The council will consider an ordinance on burning trash hours and the prohibition of burning wet garbage, with a proposed burn window of 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on days other than Monday.
Two Sidney men were in critical condition and a third injured after a car crash on Highway No. 19 about a mile and a half south of Sidney Wednesday. Victims were thrown about 50 feet from the wrecked vehicle as investigators probed the cause.

Chicago Corp and Republic Natural Gas lead Cheyenne County drilling below 3000 feet at Doran No 3 near Sidney after a producer and a gasser move. Ohio Oil No 1 Atkins wildcat in West Sidney under 3000 feet and expected to test over the weekend. Gaylord Chizum Hart No 4 in Morrill below 1000 feet. Sloss near Potter drilling two other locations for future horizons.
The region saw unusually cold April weather with lows around nine above zero in Sidney. Farmers faced slowed crop development delaying field work, with potential May freezes after jointing. Wheat and oats growth delayed, some alfalfa damage from freezes, and 30-40 percent wheat destroyed in Lincoln County. Subsoil moisture remains above normal despite a dry fall, aiding crops.
George J. Batt Jr, longtime Sidney area farmer, died in Sterling hospital at 4 30 am Thursday after a heart attack. He was born September 11 1908 in Lincoln Nebraska and lived in Scottsbluff before moving to Sidney in 1940 and Crook later. He left farming in 1948 and is survived by his wife Eva E Flirtig and seven children plus siblings. Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery with Gehrig Funeral Home directing. services at St Pauls Lutheran Church in Sidney Monday at 2 pm.
Charles H. Gathman 67 died Monday in a Sioux City hospital after a 14 month illness following a tractor accident. Rites at 1 30 pm in Gurley Methodist Church, burial in Greenwood Cemetery. Survived by three children, two brothers, one sister, five grandchildren. active in community, Masonry and Royal Arch activities.
Sheriff W. W. Schulz and County Attorney Jack Knicely departed today for North Platte to attend a two day State Law Enforcement Officials convention.
John Stimka will serve one year at the Nebraska State Penitentiary after conviction for a third offense driving while intoxicated. He was transported to Lincoln on Tuesday by Deputy Sheriff Bart Taylor.
Gaylord Maddox 27 a member of a prominent Sidney family suffered a broken neck severe head injuries and other wounds after his 1952 Chrysler convertible overturned on Highway No 19 south of Sidney. Wayne Wagner 19 and Richard Amen 19 were also injured as the car left the road guard rails were torn away and three men were thrown from the vehicle. Police continued inquiries as funeral services were held for another local fatality earlier in Cheyenne County.
VEW Post 610 selects Bob McRea as Buddy Poppy chairman for the Sidney VFW, with Tom Lenzen as post commander. Poppy day is set for Saturday May 23 in conjunction with the Auxiliary. At Monday’s meeting, the post changed its regular meeting to twice monthly on the first and third Wednesdays at 8 p.m., with next meeting on May 6. Plans cover keeping the post building open during Fort Sidney Days as a rest stop run by the auxiliary.
