Gaylord Dwight Maddox 27 died Friday from injuries in a car crash south of Sidney. Services were at First Methodist Church with Rev Harold Taylor. Interment at Sidney cemetery. Pallbearers listed. Memorials welcome to Cheyenne County Hospital. Remaining two crash victims, Wayne Wagner and Richard Amen, show improvement after treatment in Denver.

Sidney's Parent Teacher Association led Nebraska units with a 233 percent membership increase in the 1952-53 year, announced at the 21st annual Nebraska Congress of Parents and Teachers convention in Lincoln. Growth followed reorganization into school units under a general committee with chairwoman Mrs. Warren A. Stewart.

The Sidney Elks Lodge ceremonies are planned for next Sunday May 3 at 1 30 p m in the City Auditorium with more than five hundred visitors expected and a charter member list of over two hundred to be inducted. Stanley Danekes of Broken Bow will represent the Grand Exalted Ruler. Lunch will be served after the ritual and a club room will be opened over the J M McDonald Store previously home to The American Legion Club.

First World War contingent from Sidney recalls service
Eleven Sidney boys left for World War I duty thirty six years ago last Saturday. Only two remain alive: David Ells and Rev. Fred Parks. The group included Clayton Parks, Raymond Clinton, Herman Ehmke, Elliott, Elmer Wright, Albert Green, Allen Chambers, Cyril Wallace and Robert Sellers. Glen Jackson was the first to report from Cheyenne County, three days before the rest. Clinton lives in Lincoln. Wright is in California. The men traveled from Sidney to Fort Scott and then dispersed across the service. Elmer Wright was one of four brothers who served.

High Court Asked to Uphold Griffith Murder Conviction
A brief supporting the Sidney murder conviction of Hugh Griffith has been filed with the supreme court by the attorney general. Griffith, sentenced to death for the June 20 1952 murder of his wife Anna, appeals claiming unfair trial weak evidence and juror influence by a judge's pardons remark. The court is set to hear arguments May 5.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday for Thomas W Hubbell 58 a Sunol farmer who died Friday night after a four month illness. He underwent surgery in January at an Omaha hospital. The Holy Trinity Lutheran Church will host rites at 2 pm with Rev Henry Monnich presiding. Burial in Greenwood Cemetery under Gehrig Funeral Home direction. Hubbell born August 18 1894 in Glenwood Iowa lived in Brainard and Cheyenne County before farming near Sunol for 21 years. Survived by first wife Rose Lee who died 1944 and his wife Elma Rood married 1947, plus four stepchildren and many siblings.

J W Spindler 77 a former Sidney resident and Sioux Ordnance Depot worker died suddenly of a heart attack at his Denver home Thursday morning. Relatives Mrs Harold C Craig and Leland Sandler, cousins of the deceased, notified. Funeral services were held 2 pm Saturday at Lewellen Methodist Church with Craig Mortuary of Sidney handling arrangements.

The Sidney City Council, in a Monday session, approved more than one million dollars in building permits, bringing the year’s total to 1,828,935. Major items include 853,500 for Valley View residential construction and 257,000 for a new school and additions to another. plans include a 700,000 hospital beside Valley View, a brid ge over Lodgepole Creek, and annexation of the 25 acre Valley View Addition. Don Decker of Phoenix Development Co. expects full completion by September if weather cooperates.

Conscience Wins Parole Violator Surrenders in Sidney
A 22 year old Denver man George Adams walked into the Sidney Police Station and surrendered as a parole violator. He reported a Denver grand larceny conviction in March and parole with restitution, saying he fled but now aims to clear himself. He said he had been in Alliance before arriving in Sidney last Monday. Denver authorities were notified to recover him.
