Cheyenne County Historical Association to Organize in Sidney

An organizational meeting set for 7 30 p m Wednesday at Sidney Junior High School cafeteria inaugurates the Cheyenne County Historical Association a non profit group to collect preserve and display local history. Officers will be elected and committees named with bylaws to be discussed. The association aims to secure a temporary museum site a Union Pacific locomotive for courthouse lawn and fossils for the county collection plus donor pledges. Residents of nearby towns are urged to join or contact The Telegraph if unable to attend.

Potter Driver Loses License For One Year

Edward Akers of Potter has his driving license suspended for one year under the Nebraska point system. The action, effective April 13, follows 15 demerit points from November 28, 1955, to April 13 this year, with three speeding charges and one driving under the influence conviction.

Record Cheyenne County bank deposits reach new high

Cheyenne County reports a record total of 15,742,328.74 dollars in bank deposits across five banks as of April 10. County residents hold about 25 million in government savings bonds, with deposits distributed among American National Bank of Sidney, Dalton State Bank, First State Bank of Lodgepole, Potter State Bank, and Sidney National Bank.

Bond Sales In County Show Big Increase

Cheyenne County residents bought 240 209 in savings bonds during March the largest monthly total of the year pushing 1956 county sales to 452 146 at 461 percent of the annual goal. Nebraska March sales rose over the prior month with total year to date at 31 888 106 or 32 percent of the yearly goal.

Banner County Approves Half Million School Bond

A school bond issue in Banner County passed by 352 to 224 to finance a new central building for most local students. Two small areas were merged with adjoining districts while the majority remain in the district operating the central school. Both elementary and seventh grade levels will use the new facility.

Miss Nebraska Interview On KSID Sunday

KSID will air an interview with Miss Nebraska 1955 Sandra Speicher Sunday at 4 PM. Jo Schroeder of KLIN will host the transcription while Miss Speicher promotes the Miss Nebraska and Miss Fort Sidney contests staged by the Jaycees in Sidney. The Fort Sidney queen will be chosen at a May dance and compete in the state pageant on June 12 and 13 with Kay Ritchie and Gov. Victor Anderson among attendees.

Funeral Today for Mrs Van Mark 53

Funeral services were held at Craig Mortuary for Mrs John Van Mark 53 who died Wednesday in Memorial Hospital. Burial was in Greenwood Cemetery. She was born Dec 14 1902 in Kearney, married Dec 2 1924 to John Van Mark of Torrington and had three children. The family lived near Sidney since 1937.

Life Sentence Of Bowman Cut To Term Of 40 Years

The State Pardon Board commuted the life sentence of William Bowman of Sidney to 40 years. Bowman and Orville Childers were convicted of murdering 89 year old William Moore during a 1937 burglary. Moore died from injuries after resisting the break in. The board had earlier commuted Childers to 40 years.

Reserve Week Proclaimed By Sidney Mayor

Mayor Doyle Foland proclaims next week as Military Reserve Week in Sidney. The six month reserve training program targets youths aged 17 to 18 percent. The program, under the Reserve Forces Act of 1955, requires six months of training followed by active reserve service for several years.

City to Hold Yard Trash Pickup Next Week

Sidney city crews will collect yard debris for three days starting next week. The schedule divides pickup by area north of the Union Pacific tracks on Monday, between the UP and Burlington tracks on Tuesday, and south of the Burlington tracks on Wednesday. Residents should place piles near alleys or by cans, not at the curb.
