Sidney Airport Expansion Underway With Two Runways Planned
A 37000 dollar improvement program began at Sidney Municipal Airport last week. It will add two long runways, a fenced perimeter, an administration area with parking, and space for future growth. State and federal funds back the project, expected to finish in about sixty days. Boundary fence posts were one third complete before a dispute between a state surveyor and a private engineer delayed progress. the issue was referred to the state aeronautics commission. Heavy earthmoving equipment is shaping two runways, with future plans for a third. Current runways will be crowned and seeded for a smooth surface, with hard-surfacing possible if funds allow. The CAA plans to move its intermediate field to the new site and erect a watchtower this summer, plus install other equipment. Lighting remains undecided, possibly using lights from the present field. Field electricity will come from REA, and discussions about extending power lines to the airport entrance continue. Completion by late summer could make Sidney one of western Nebraska’s top airports by fall, under Don Brown’s 24-hour management.

Two Sidney youths, James Russell Wamsley of Hastings College and John Charles Fisher of the University of Nebraska, were named Naval ROTC scholarship recipients. From over 31 thousand applicants, 89 Nebraskans passed initial exams, narrowing to 22 principals. Wamsley and Fisher are among the six alternates. The plan offers a four year college course leading to commissions as Ensign or Marine Second Lieutenant.

The Junior Chamber of Commerce has booked a top carnival with eleven rides and twenty five concessions for Fort Sidney Days on June 23 to 25. Free acts costing over a thousand dollars are planned, with downtown setup by city council order. Donations from VFW and American Legion clubs were received. Rudy's IGA plans a float for the parade on June 29 and other floats are expected by May 1. Forsyth and Dowis carnival is signed. tentative plans include a costume parade, a float parade, and a Lodgepole Valley Saddie Club horse show. A three day baseball series with teams from Potter, Dalton, Gurley and Sidney is possible but not definite.
