Large acreage of winter wheat in Kimball Cheyenne Deuel counties was winter killed or blown out due to extreme cold ice and dry topsoil. Some replanted to spring grains or abandoned. Surviving wheat aided by spring moisture. beets planted near last year’s levels. safflower and barley up as replanting expands. Oats barley and spring wheat planting delayed by last week’s snow and cold.

Farm wage rates are lower this year than in 1948, says L F Snipes of the University of Nebraska. Daily wage with board and room now 5.30, without board 6.70, monthly with house 135, monthly without board 110. all figures show declines versus 1948 except monthly with board and room. Harvest season may push daily rates higher but not above 1948 levels.

Ray Fox Named Rapid City Judge
Attorney Raymond J. Fox formerly of Sidney was elected municipal judge at Rapid City South Dakota on Tuesday by seven hundred votes. He was known as an attorney and OPA official while in Sidney and is the son in law of Mr and Mrs E L Uptegrove.

Drilling at Oil Test to Start Soon Near Gurley
The Ohio Oil Company will begin drilling its test well east of Gurley within a week or ten days. A derrick is erected and tools are being rigged, with five to six days anticipated for completion. Kerr-McGee of Oklahoma City is contracted for the drilling. The site lies five miles east and two miles south of Gurley on land owned by Marty Egging and others. The test marks Cheyenne County’s first major oil company effort to strike oil.

REA Extends West Section in Kimball County
Two new REA power line sections energized in Kimball County this week extend north of Kimball and north of Dix. The Force Construction Co expands to about 500 miles of added lines, linking Kimball Cheyenne Banner Weld Logan and Laramie counties for a near complete regional grid. Work resumes after the January blizzard pause, using Kimball fair grounds as base before branching from Pine Bluffs and Sidney for the remaining miles. Pine Bluffs Rural Electric Co. administers the REA territory in western Cheyenne County.
