More than 100 women gathered Wednesday night at the Educational Service Unit building for a free breast cancer clinic. Movies, slides, a model, and pamphlets taught detection. self examination was emphasized and a physician visit advised if a lump is found. A follow up clinic is planned in Chappell May 21 at the high school auditorium from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m.
Sidney City Council approved a location for an access road from south 1th Ave to Parkland Development property along a 100 ft right of way. The vote focused on land acquisition costs with condemnation cited as a possibility and opposition warned of a blank check without local cost clarity.
Officials in Sidney discuss federal flood insurance guidelines that may require strict building codes in the flood hazard area. The NRC’s Al Mathews says regulations will be reasonable and not force moves, with new structures paying actuarial rates and existing buildings largely exempt unless heavily damaged.
Western Nebraska Technical College offers its annual Secretarial Seminar on Wednesday from 8 30 am to 3 30 pm now open to high school and college students in business courses. Dr Bill Padroza will speak on effective communications and a secretaries panel will discuss a good working environment. Jeff Pippitt will demonstrate styles from one basic cut.
Third District representative Virginia Smith notified the Lodgepole Bicentennial Committee that Lodgepole has been designated a Bicentennial Community effective Thursday. An official Bicentennial flag and other designations will be presented during ceremonies at a date to be announced.
Bertram O'Connor of Sidney receives the Good Neighbor award from Ak-Sar-Ben after nomination by the Cheyenne County Chamber of Commerce. She manages the Sidney Municipal Swimming Pool, volunteers in the Memorial Home Candy Striper program, supports the United Fund Drive, church activities, and CCD classes, and has logged over 8,000 volunteer hours guiding about 100 teen volunteers. Her husband Harald and their two daughters and five grandchildren share her Sidney residence and ongoing home refurbishment plans.
American Legion Post in Sidney will recreate the shot heard round the world to begin Nebraska’s Bicentennial Year observances. Members meet at 6 am at the A W Drive In and fire rounds at 6 20 am with a ceremony at Greenwood Cemetery. Similar events are planned across Cheyenne County as the Lexington Minutemen sparked rebellion 200 years ago.
