New City Library Proposed in Sidney
The Sidney Library Board told the city council it can obtain matching Federal funds for a new library building estimated at 130000 dollars with about half funded by federal sources. The city manager said the remaining half could be provided without extra taxes. A Tuesday meeting with architect Howard Duncan was planned to discuss preliminary plans for a site on the east half of the present city square. The current library, over fifty years old, has space and facilities limitations. The board says a larger building would expand services and volumes for the community.

Dorwart Named Sidney City Council President and Mayor
Dr. C. B. Dorwart was chosen Monday night as president of the Sidney city council and thus will fulfill the mayor’s duties. Dean Wilson became vice chairman, with J. L. Thorpe and Robert Hossle sworn in as new council members. The housing authority appointed Thorpe to a five year term Preble to three years and Hassle to two years. Preble named housing authority chair and Thorpe vice chair. The authority voted to move 24000 dollars to the city general fund for a new fire truck. Dorwart has previously served as mayor under earlier government forms.

Eldon Porter, 40, who confessed to killing liquor store clerk Bill Shamis, pled guilty to second degree murder and was sentenced to life imprisonment by District Judge John H. Kins. Porter was transported to the penitentiary by Sheriff W. W. Schulz and Deputy Sheriff Kermit Brumbaugh. The downgrade from first degree reflected diminished premeditation. Porter is the first to receive a murder conviction sentence since Hugh Griffiths in 1952, whose death sentence was commuted to life by Governor Robert Crosbie.
