Prune Summer Flowering Shrubs Now
Prune summer flowering shrubs during the dormant season before new growth. Shrubs to prune now include Rose of Sharon, barberry privet, honeysuckle, and bush roses. Use thinning cuts to ground older branches and avoid all at the same height. Newly planted shrubs need pruning at planting and annually to encourage close to ground branching. Spring bloomers should be pruned shortly after flowering.
Pruning Guidance for Colorful Shrubs and Rejuvenation
Shrubs with colored twigs like red twig dogwood should shed a third of old wood yearly for richer color. Overgrown forsythia mock orange deutzia and spiraea can be cut to the ground to rejuvenate. Do not make this an annual habit.
