Deuel County Find Benefits Archeologists
Federal highway salvage archaeology in Nebraska, a joint effort by the State Department of Roads and the State Historical Society, has uncovered an unidentified historic site in Deuel County south of Chappell along Interstate 80. Excavations reveal a mid 19th century Oregon Trail road ranch with a wooden building, trash pits, and artifacts including infantry buttons, muskets parts, bottles, wagon hardware, tools, and personal items. Military presence during road and railroad construction is noted.
