Declamatory Contest Honors At Sidney High School

Zella Owens won the oratory crown while Charlotte Pierce claimed the Dramatic prize and Marjorie Wallick the Humorous award in the annual high school declamatory contest. Judge praise followed performances. Miss Radcliffe’s coaching noted for district and state success.

410 Boys in Brown Breakfast in Sidney

Sidney prepared a welcome breakfast for four hundred ten soldiers arriving by Union Pacific in the early hours. Mr C W West organized a total community effort with bakers butchers and local hotels supplying food and coffee while Mr Shoemaker located the battalion at last after a tense search. The volunteers received a hearty response from the soldiers and a public vote of thanks acknowledged the town effort.

Monday Storm Ranked Worst In Years

The weekend weather shifted from mild rain to a blizzard not seen in years. The storm peaked Monday morning then eased by evening, causing business shutdowns, train delays, and blocked roads while some stock loss and feed shortages occurred. Still the vast moisture benefits crops offset the damages overall.

The US Army Tank Special with one automobile, two flat cars, and one Pullman will reach Sidney on the Union Pacific April 21, then move to Sterling Colorado via Burlington at night. A Victory Loan Far West Flight Special arrives May 1 at 1 a.m. for movement out, consisting of three Standard Sleepers and nine baggage cars, with 100 officers and men. local spectators may view Army planes if it fits the itinerary.

Liberty State Bank Opens in town with strong crowd

The Liberty State Bank opened last Saturday in fine weather drawing a large town crowd. Mrs Flon Slawson helped greet guests giving each a fern spray and ecarnation while men received a smoke. Though small and crowded, staff served patrons courteously as farmers and business leaders join as directors and stockholders, signaling a promising future.

Ledgers Found in Wall Reveal 19th Century Trade

Workmen uncover two leather ledgers from 1877 to 1879 hidden between plaster and stone at Essig Hardware. The books, once owned by James F. Stimpkins and Kennard and Stimpkins, show extensive credit dealings from snow shoes to bird cages and even whiskey at two dollars. Mrs. Essig suspects the diaries record early Sidney days and invites observers to view the volumes.

Fighting Sons of Guns Arrive from France for April Concerts

Forty seasoned veterans direct from France arrive for April 19 and 20 events in Sidney. A street parade and concert feature a tenor, comedian, allied quartet, and a military band that saw action overseas. The group is billed as The Fighting Sons of Guns with potential further performances depending on notices.

Bootlegger, silk thief, and railroad theft suspects in court

A bootlegger was fined one hundred dollars and jailed for inability to pay after a town bootlegging attempt was interrupted by Marshal Bowman. A Mexican thief took silk shirts from Cheyenne Trading Co and was arrested, paying fine and costs. Sheriff McDaniel led a search with several officials recovering goods and detaining eleven Mexicans and one American, fined fifty to two hundred dollars plus costs.

Maundy Thursday and Easter Services Held by Scottish Rite Masons

The Scottish Rite Masons of Sidney observe Maundy Thursday at 8 p m on April 17 and Easter Sunday at 3 p m on April 20 at the Masonic Temple. Past Wise Master Joseph Davis of Omaha will officiate. All members of the 18th degree and above are requested to attend.

Adjourned Meeting of Commissioners in Sidney Nebraska

The Cheyenne County Board of Commissioners met April 2 1919 at Courthouse Sidney with all members present. The board discussed appointing Sid ney citizens to advise the assessor for fair city taxation and considered opening a street section near Block 48 Chichester Addition. The highway plan includes a public highway declaration and provision of a galvanized iron culvert. The day focused on highway inspections and adjourned to May 6th. A note praises Leo Traces 13 year old boy for plowing 200 acres with a Hart Par and maintaining the machine.
