A six-inch storm left heavy wet snow in the Sidney area causing slick highways and poor visibility. The weather bureau cautioned stockmen about more snow while optimistic reports noted beneficial moisture for crops. Temperatures ranged from the mid 30s to the high 40s with scattered precipitation across Nebraska.
Bad weather nearly halted the Memorial Rest Home fund drive in Sidney yet $2,000 more was added, bringing total to about $63,500. Ira Steward reports rural roads still hinder canvassing, so letters and direct pledges are being mailed to 300 to 400 rural residents to keep the drive moving while awaiting weather clears and bids for architectural plans.
A local plea explains that small gifts to Memorial Rest Home building fund are amplified. A $5 contribution is matched by $5 from the Doran Foundation and boosted by 40 percent from Hill Burton federal funds, yielding $12 for building and equipment. The appeal urges any donation of $1, $5, $10 or $25 to aid senior housing.
Deputy Sheriff Kermit Brum baugh investigated an accident on Highway 30 about twenty miles east of Sidney. Two cars left the scene after a rear end crash involving Virginia Don Garra and Bernard Guss from Omaha. Passengers Virginia Wallace and Judy Don Garra were treated for non serious injuries at a Sidney motel. A second crash occurred when Delwyn Flohr from Bucyrus struck a parked truck driven by Edward Lennam of Naperville Jr. Damage totaled 400 to Flohr s car and 15 to the truck. A pickup driven by Forrest W Elliot of Dalton swerved, hit a bridge and rolled 90 miles north on Highway 19. The pickup, owned by Burton Cunningham, sustained about 500 in damage.

Zoning requests were referred to planning board. liquor license for Atwoods approved. minor electric rate changes enacted. council retained city staff and planning board members. housing authority appoints officials to oversee Sioux Villa.
R B D Berkheimer as administrator of Ralph L Gangarosa estate sues C R Frame and Ronald Lee Frame in Cheyenne County District Court. The action stems from a July 3 1957 accident on Highway 19 south of Gurley. Claim seeks $22,626 for lost income, car destruction, and funeral costs.
Ten Nebraska cities including Sidney discuss a new residential school for the mentally retarded. A Sidney meeting at 8 p.m. at the Junior High will be led by Wayne Loch with the community improvement program educational committee. Dr Vernon Hungate chairs the advisory group gathering data to guide site selection for a program starting with 80 thousand dollars in 1957.
Ten contestants will compete for Miss Fort Sidney 1958 as the Sid ney Junior Chamber of Commerce presents the four year event. An afternoon tea at the Fort Sidney Hotel begins the day with five judges including state senators Monroe Bixler and Don McGinley, and local sponsors. The winner will be announced Friday night at the Sidney High School auditorium after judging personality talent and beauty.
Ohio Oil Co moves rig to Morrill County for a test at Lane No. 2, a wildcat about a half mile northwest of Lane No. 1 in CWZ W144 NW Sec 17-17-49. No. 1 Miller in Spearow Field and No. 1 Howard Fisher in Llama Field expected to be completed or plugged by week end, while Miller undergoes drill stem testing and observers see good chances for commercial production.
Heart attack claims Neil Parady 54 after three weeks in Cheyenne County Memorial Hospital. Funeral at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church Saturday at 10 a.m. with burial in Greenwood Cemetery. Memorials to Heart Fund. Parady, born August 11, 1903, Pilger Neb., lived in Gurley Dalton Sidney with wife Hattie Kruger Parady. Survived by wife five sisters and three brothers.
The Lions will host a second Easter egg hunt at Legion Park this Saturday for children from pre-school through third grade. Five thousand eggs will be hidden with some containing dimes, and the park will be divided by age groups to ensure safe play amid hopefully fine weather.
The Oil and Gas Journal blasts Nebraska producers for not curbing output amid a glut as the Nebraska Legislative Council studies needed oil and gas laws in Sidney. Nebraska has no crude production regulations while Texas Oklahoma and Kansas show a 22 percent drop from two years ago. Nebraska’s 52,283 barrels this week resemble last week’s level, with a prior average above 54,000. The Journal argues that Nebraskans should accept proration and note Ohio Oil Co. uses its own proration system. majors Pan-American, Shell, Magnolia, Superior, British-American, and independents hold significant acreage, yet oppose proration for fear of hurting business.
The Cheyenne County Soil Conservation Handbook will be ready for distribution soon. Dot Rapp ASC office manager says the publication compiles soil conservation practices and requirements with seeding charts terracing diagrams and step by step procedures to attain correct results. It is the first of its kind in the area and aims to aid farmers and ranchers in the county.
