Weeds in Seed Wheat Detriment to Clean Crop

Weeds in the seed wheat raise weed crop on farms where wheat is grown. An investigation collected 55 seed wheat samples from grain drills across the main spring wheat areas in Minnesota to determine the amount and kinds of weed seeds sown with wheat.

North and South Dakota Seed Quality Report

In North and South Dakota only two drills sowed clean seed while other seed wheat carried weed seed averaging 2 percent by weight. This means about 53 000 weed seeds per acre were sown on 53 farms. Weed presence crowds wheat and consumes moisture and soil fertility, reducing yield and price. Clean land and pure seed yield better wheat and market value.
