About 20 farmers joined Sidney Rotarians for Friday night dinner. Ed Apte grove presided and appointed Dr F A Barger as district convention delegate. Prof G F Liebendorfer led the program with talks on acquainting farmers with Rotarians and on farm issues. Leroy D Willey discussed direct buying by packers and its impact on hog prices.

Morrow seals Mexico oil dispute with Calles reform
Dwight W Morrow, the U S ambassador, brokered a settlement with Mexican President Calles that ends retroactive and confiscatory provisions for American oil interests. The new regulations remove past penalties on pre May 1 1917 rights and mark a historic shift after a decade of United States Mexico tension. Mexican oil production has fallen from about 90 million barrels in 1926 to roughly 60 million in 1927 amid the dispute.

Prairie Fire Near Potter Sweeps Over Wide Area
A prairie and stubble fire near Potter, about 14 miles northwest, swept across a section of land on Emil Nelson and Charles Brothers properties before wind-driven flames were checked. About 50 locals joined in to confine the blaze, burning one straw stack and preventing damage to buildings. Nelson had warned there was little wind at start, then a sudden gust fanned the fire. Public thanks were extended to all helpers.

Evening classes close after week of potato and auto studies
The Sidney vocational agriculture program ended for 1928 with a two reel film on potato selection and certification. Auto and potato courses attracted many, totaling over 150 participants, including 163 in the automobile class. Sessions covered vehicle systems, maintenance, and special talks on Ford, Dodge, Chrysler, Nash, Star, and Durant brands. The potato course addressed varieties, seed selection, treatments, planting, spraying, and certification, ending with a Nebraska film on potato fields.

Students from Sidney placed in all four classes at Friday subdistrict declamatory contest held in the local high school auditorium. Judges were J. H. Stouteville, Miss Viola Shepherd, L. D. Loreman, with Mrs. Loreman as alternate. Winners named by credit points include Odetta Lockwood Kimball in Humorous, Mary Heming Chappell in Dramatic, William Day Oshkosh in Oratorical, Bernard Gyger Chappell in Extemporaneous. Sidney entrants earned top spots across all divisions.

Congress to act on flood control measure this session
Washington April 1 The Jones flood control bill faces swift action in the house led by Chairman Reid plan to secure a preferred calendar position. The measure could reach a house vote in a week or 10 days after a committee approval with minor amendments. Funds for surveys and gauging stations will begin immediately to study stream flow and runoff for flood control and navigation in cooperation with irrigation, under War Department approval.

Richard Kepler to Be Buried Here on Wednesday
The community mourns Richard Kepler age 21 son of Mr. and Mrs. R P Kepler after pneumonia contracted during flu and exposure led to death at a Grand Island hospital. Funeral will be held Wednesday in Sidney after his body is brought from Grand Island. Born February 1905 in Toledo Iowa he was a Sidney High School graduate and worked for Oliver Chilled Plow company returning home recently after a truck trip to Omaha.

Senate expects to pass farm bill this week
Washington April 1 The McNary Haugen farm relief bill is to be considered in the senate this week with prospects of passage after debate. The house expects to take up the measure in about two weeks after flood legislation. The fight bears a presidential edge with Hoover opposing and Lowden supporting it. Coolidge vetoed it last year and is expected to veto again. A department of agriculture statement cites a drop in farm bankruptcies as recovery begins, while the equalization fee remains a sticking point to limit domestic prices through surplus storage or export.

Scottsbluff Wins High Honors in Commercial Tests
Scottsbluff took first in the district commercial contest held at the high school, scoring 61 percent. Bayard and Dix followed, with 33 and 16 percent respectively, as 79 students from nine towns competed. Winners were named in nine events including spelling, bookkeeping, penmanship, shorthand, and typewriting, with multiple placers from Scottsbluff, Bayard, Dix, Gering, Oshkosh, Sidney, Bridgeport, and Lodge Pole.

News of the death of V. A. Klein, a pioneer inhabitant of this county, was received late Monday. He was operated on at 9 15 a m Friday at St Joseph hospital in Omaha, and died at four o clock Monday afternoon from ulcers of the stomach. His daughter Miss Clara Klein is in Omaha. Two Sidney Bo Bo Boys Hurt In Auto Crash At North Platte
John Swain and Al Toole, local men, were taken to North Platte hospital after a Sunday evening auto crash while returning from North Platte. The Buick was badly damaged. others had minor injuries. The party was said to be racing train No 18 when the crash occurred. George Porter called his wife and mother to report the accident. further details and names of the other party members are not known.
