Dorothy S. Dunn, a local Peace Corps volunteer, returns on leave and departs September 8 with about 26 volunteers to Brazil for four H and agricultural extension work. They join nearly 200 volunteers already aiding Brazil’s agriculture, health, and community development.
Alma College expects about 950 students to enroll as the fall term starts mid September with freshmen on September 13 and upperclassmen returning September 16. Orientation includes testing, meetings, library tour, and seminars. The Monteith Library, costing 950000, opens with space for 120000 volumes and study rooms.
The Shepherd Jaycees host a donkey softball game at the high school athletic field in the evening under the lights. A Jaycees team will face local merchants in an entertaining community event for fans.
Dick Loomis of Shepherd won Class A tractor pulling at Isabella County Fair with 10 875 feet 11 inches, the heaviest pull for this size at a local fair. Lane Chapman, also of Shepherd, matched pulls from 9,975 to 10,650 pounds as Loomis claimed top prize of 25 dollars. Others earning money included Larry Crawford 15 dollars, Les Freed 10 dollars, and Leroy Loomis 4 dollars. Fifty more contestants and officials are listed with judges Harold Howard and Ken Hertherington.
Democrats filed over 330000 signatures on August 26 to demand a referendum on the Massachusetts Ballot. State Elections Director Montgomery said petitions likely meet the requirement to place the question on the November 3 ballot, blocking the new voting form in the general election.
At a Saturday caucus in the Coe Township Community Building both parties met at 2:00 p.m. The Republicans nominated Wilber Benn for supervisor and Dorothy Wend for treasurer while not nominating a candidate for Justice of the Peace. John Wilberding may seek Justice of the Peace, Gerald Shock remains Trustee, Donald Lee Myers nominated for constable, and Elton Salisbury’s incumbent status for supervisor was acknowledged. The Democrats nominated Eugene Gillian for clerk William Narther for treasurer John Wilberding for Justice of the Peace Gerald Shock for Trustee and Elton Grace for constable, leaving the supervisor post open for Elton Salisbury to finish his term with a clean field.
Rep Russell Strange finishes third in Isabella County 1804 to 1789 by 15 votes but places third in Montcalm County with 515 ballots. Donald Petersen leads Montcalm with a two to one margin. Sheriff Raymond Martin seeks re nomination against Edwin Matlock and George Andrews. Rollen Gross wins Isabella County Drain Commissioner seat for COP over Matt McDonnell 2092 to 1644. Isabella County Republicans announced the county convention will be held at the 4-H Camp on Coldwater Lake instead of the county courthouse. The event precedes the GOP Round-Up and Barbecue with sessions including roll calls, resolutions, and elections for the executive committee and state convention delegates. U S Representative Elford A Cederberg of the Tenth District will give the keynote address.
Isabella County seeks citizen input to create a guided fall color tour or self drive route. The plan aims to include scenic land use and preserve beauty while accommodating various seasons. Citizens should send road names and locations to Michigan Central University Biology Department by September 7 for county supervisor consideration.
More than twenty horseshoe pitchers will gather at the local courts Saturday October 3 to crown a county champion. Defending titleholder Harold Hetherington will face a strong field as events begin at 10 00 A M with beginners class, followed by classes C B and A. The State Championship unfolds in Hartford Michigan September 5 6 and 7. Local summer league boosts interest with entrants from Breckenridge and Shepherd. Art Miser leads the Shepherd league with Hal Muscott of Breckenridge close behind.
