Local Youth to Lead UNICEF Drive on Halloween Night

The Senior MYF of the local Methodist Church will tour homes Sunday evening from 6:30 to 8 as part of the annual UNICEF drive. Since 1960 UNICEF fund totals have grown from 3600 to over 1.5 million in 1959 and 1963 countrywide efforts have expanded with milk, vaccines and penicillin aid reaching millions.

Rabies Shots For Dogs Clinic Planned In Isabella County

Plans have been completed for the first rabies inoculation clinic for dogs in Isabella County. The event is the first of several clinics to be held across the county as directed by the Isabella County Board of Supervisors. See Dogs, Page 2.

Rotary Club members urge all registered voters to vote on November 8 and offer free transportation to the polls. Call Shepherd 3591 for a ride or to arrange transport. Mothers with small children can bring them and a driver will babysit while the mother votes.

Isabella County GOP Rally In Shepherd Features Local Officials

The Isabella County Republicans led by State Senator Lynn O. Francis and State Representative Russell Strange plan an old fashioned rally at Shepherd on October 29. The meeting starts at 8 00 P M at the North Town Hall with GOP candidates introduced to attendees and a screening of the movie Ambassador of Friendship.

Halloween party scheduled Monday October 31 at 4 00 PM in the Methodist Church for all Girl Scouts and Brownies and anyone interested in joining Cider and donuts will be served as refreshments.

County Board Adjourns With Record Budget and Jail Delays

Supervisors ended a 31 day year and adopted a record 1961 budget amid ongoing jail contract delays. The board moved to monthly meetings from January 1961 and approved a $507,147 welfare budget, a $100,000 social welfare allocation, and salary boosts for officials and staff as the jail project looms at about $410,000.

Village Special Election: Water Bond Proposal

The village asks electors and taxpayers to approve a 26000 general obligation bond issue to fund a second water source and water distribution improvements. The plan, to be repaid in 10 years, promises no additional tax or water rate increases and aims to prevent outages, raise pressures, and improve fire protection.

Red Cross Draws Support From United Fund Contributions

The Isabella County Red Cross Home Service handled 718 cases last year assisting servicemen families with leaves, counseling, and emergency aid. Red Cross funding comes from United Fund allotments and local donations. The chapter trains Gray Ladies to deliver services at CMU Hospital and explores expansion to Mt. Pleasant State Home and Training School. Free First Aid and Care of the Sick courses will be offered through Mt. Pleasant High School with instructor volunteers.
