Center forms for paving machines sit ready two miles south of the Shepherd Traffic Interchange. The photo shows work advanced a couple miles by Saturday night as crews moved north.
Dynamic young U S Senator Frank Church of Idaho will headline a Congressional Dinner for the 10th District Democrats in Midland on Monday October 10. Church, a top Democratic speaker, travels to Michigan to bolster candidate Daniel E Reed of Midland against incumbent Elford.
The Shepherd Recreation Association executive board held its first meeting on Thursday evening September 29 at the Shepherd State Bank. Ten members were present. G Robert Bates was named president and appointed chairmen for committees. Charles Weese and Mrs Paul Warmbrunn were tasked to study the Constitution and By-Laws. Russell Lethorn will inquire about accident insurance for a playground program. Mrs Gerald Cook was named chairman of the play See Recreation Ass'n, Page Two.
County Chairman Tom Northway says two Republican rallies will be held in Northeast Isabella County this week. One gathering at Loomis Hall on Thursday Oct 6 at 8 p m invites Vernon and Wise Townships residents and nearby communities to attend featuring Ambassador of Friendship a film about Richard M Nixon and his world tours with refreshments.
Michigan State Highway Department replies Shepherd Village Council that grade separation at Shepherd Road and relocated US 27 cannot be done now. Traffic analysis showed Shepherd Road did not meet criteria for immediate separation. Officials study further action as fear of unguarded crossing on the new freeway harming Shepherd’s economy.
The Michigan United Fund started 1947 to organize health and welfare fund drives in Michigan. Its executive board and county chapters recruit volunteers to promote federated fundraising and allocate money to 18 national and 17 state agencies plus eight local agencies. Funds via UF reduce repeated campaigns and save volunteer time though services may still incur nominal fees for recipients.
Shepherd village considers hiring a trash-hauling contractor at 312 dollars a month or 3744 dollars a year if residents do not clean alleys. Officials warn alleys must be cleared by November 1 to avoid tax-funded collection.
Parents are urged this school year to instruct children to refrain from walking in the road. They risk their lives and create hazardous driving conditions. Older students in the road set a bad example for younger children to imitate. Do not wait for a serious injury to address this.

All mothers interested in Brownies or intermediate Girl Scouts will meet Mrs. Earl Goit, neighborhood chairman, in the Methodist Church dining room Thursday October 6 at 4 p.m. The meeting aims to organize the troop and begin activities for the year.
