The Michigan Trucking Association urges highway travelers for the Fourth of July weekend to drive with care. President Herb Schindler Jr warns of a bloody toll from traffic accidents and urges sensible speeds, safe vehicles, and wide margins for safety. Could Have Been Much Worse Wrecking Old Taylor House

Wreckers demolishing the Old Taylor House found an electrical appliance wrapped around water pipes still powered. The device rested on a burned pillow, suggesting a hidden fire risk. No injuries or exact incident time are known.

Mt Pleasant Shepherd and Weidman residents must submit corrections by July 1. D E Hurrell a district manager for General Telephone says the directory is printed quickly after final edits and changes cannot be accepted after the deadline. He notes the company in Des Plaines Illinois compiles prints and returns the directory on a tight schedule.

No Corn Husks In Garbage Containers

The note urges residents not to dispose corn husks in garbage containers as they impede disposal and raise costs. Cooperation is requested.

Shepherd Public Schools formed a new school board last Tuesday evening with members Clifford Willis Paul Warmbrunn Richard O'Connor Robert Adams A E Murphy John Wilberding Orville Klumpp and Dr Howard Dearing elected as trustee who was absent for the photo.

Mt Pleasant JC's 4th of July Celebration at Island Park

The Mt. Pleasant J C s sponsor a four day July 1 to 4 celebration at Island Park. G Wade Shows will run the midway and a wrestling match is set for Monday July 4 at 8 pm in front of the Grand Stand. Kid's Day Saturday offers rides 1 to 5 pm and a bike giveaway at 5 pm. Sundown Indian Pageant and a 10 pm fireworks display close the event. Dwight Reava is general chairman.

Freeway Construction Advances Toward Gratiot Isabella Line

Road crews move dirt rapidly toward the Gratiot Isabella line on the new four lane divided Freeway. Work to extend the road north to Clare is scheduled for completion next year.

Low Bid Tops 15 Million on US 27 Highway Projects

Bids totaling 15.25 million dollars were let for 27 highway projects across four counties including 33 miles of freeway. The US-27 Isabella County stretch covers 18.4 miles with an M-20 interchange near Mt. Pleasant. Low bidders are Hartel Deyo of Grand Rapids and C. E. Utterback of Mt. Pleasant in a joint bid.

Mobile X Ray Unit Sets July 12 to 19 Reach Isabella

The mobile x ray unit will visit Isabella County from July 12 through July 19 to screen for tuberculosis and other chest conditions. Dr. E J Bren ner urges every eligible resident to get a free chest x ray as early TB often has no symptoms.

Isabella County Safety Council Meets July 5

The Isabella County Safety Council will meet Tuesday July 5 in the Municipal Court Room Mt Pleasant at 8 p m. Prizes from the water safety slogan contest will be presented by Norris Ingless. Gerald Shipman will discuss plans for the Governor's Regional Safety Conference on August 15 in Mt Pleasant. The Good Driver for June will be honored. The public is invited to join and support safety projects.

Shepherd School Board Names Officers and Discusses Budget

The Shepherd Public Schools organized a seven member Board of Education with Robert Adams re-elected president and Orville Klumpp named vice president. A. E. Murphy was re elected secretary and Richard O Connor became treasurer. The board reviewed an athletic budget and millage plans to reduce from 7.9 to 6 mills, with total debt retirement at about 14 mills. A boundary line between the Winn and Shepherd Elementary areas was discussed for future clarification.

Picnic In Spite Of Rain At Island Park

The Willing Workers Club held a picnic at Island Park on Thursday June 22 with 11 members despite heavy rain. Visitors dodged rain drops for afternoon entertainment as the group enjoyed their outdoor gathering.
