Republican gubernatorial hopeful Paul D. Bagwell visited Elm Street on Wednesday outlining a plan to create 100000 jobs annually in Michigan. He pitched job growth as central to his campaign and outlined steps to attract industry and investment.
A mobile chest x ray unit from the Michigan Department of Health will visit Shepherd on July 18 as part of a county wide survey in Isabella County. The free service screens for tuberculosis and other chest abnormalities for residents 18 and older. The effort stresses early detection and protecting families. The schedule includes Mt Pleasant July 12 9 to 1 and 2 to 6. City Hall July 13 10 to 6 and July 14 12 to 8. Shepherd July 18 12 to 6. Blanchard July 19 12 to 6.
The 1960 census of the Shep herd Public Schools shows enrollment up by 51 children ages 5 to 19, totaling 1250 versus 1199 in 1959. Children under five numbered 402, up from 362 a year earlier, while Supt Paul Warmbrunn reports all faculty positions filled except one. Paul Schell takes a first semester leave for military service, leaving his secondary math post to be filled.
More than 100 Central Michigan University students participate in camping and recreation programs statewide this summer under CMU instructors earning college credit. Among counselors is Zora Dean from Shepherd at Camp Henry in Newaygo.
The Methodist Church of Shepherd gratefully receives a $1000 gift from Mr. and Mrs. Willard Campbell. Mrs. Campbell taught at Shepherd High School. the couple, longtime residents, offer the donation as thanks for kindness shown to them in town and church.
The Philathia Sunday School Class of the Methodist Church met at the Chaffin cottage near Sanford for a picnic dinner after church on Sunday June 19. Visiting, boating and fishing provided entertainment.
The Broomfield Hospital Auxiliary schedules its annual ice cream social on Sunday July 10 on the hospital lawn serving from two to six in the afternoon. Prices are 50 cents for adults and 25 cents for children under five. Proceeds fund a private room and other changes for the hospital, with thanks to past contributors and participants.
Thirty-one children attend the St. Louis Pool swimming program with sessions for Sunfish I Sunfish II Herring Beginning on weekdays and Blue Gills and minnows on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Joe Halcomb directs the program while local minor league baseball and girls softball results are listed: Hawks 4 3, Blue Jays 3 4, Cardinals 6 3, Woodpeckers 3 6.
Isabella County supervisors vote for strict enforcement of dog laws. Dogs must show a valid veterinarian vaccination certificate within two years to receive a license. The board also revises jail bid plans and adds supervisors to the social security system. A curfew at Coldwater Lake park was set to 11 p.m.
Preparations for the 1960 Isa bella Youth and Farm Fair run August 16 to 20. Fair manager B. C. Mellencamp and staff advance plans with a larger Fair Book, to be distributed soon. Civitan Club supporters exceed 100. Extension Office staff drafted the book. Space is sold in display areas. Merchants Building space via John Collin. Farm Equipment via Lawrence Lee. Automobile space via Bud Archey.
The Masons and Eastern Stars and their families will gather Sunday July 10 at School Section Lake. Attendees should bring their own place settings and a dish to pass.
The wedding of Susan Burchfield and Norman Marten in Charlotte drew about 300 guests from Lansing Detroit Dearborn Milwaukee Wisconsin Texas Eaton Rapids Dimondale and Shepherd. Attendees from Shepherd included Mrs Eva Davis Robert Davis Mrs Ted Latoski and daughter Mr and Mrs Deval Davis Margie Rhode and Mr and Mrs Ira DeLong and children.
