Hare outlines liberal creed for Michigan Democrats

James M. Hare, three term secretary of state and gubernatorial candidate, spoke to the Methodist Church Board of Christian Social Relations on Christian Social Relations in Government. Lack Of Contest Cools Interest In School Election

A light vote marked Monday's school election as contests faded. Newell Oren challenged incumbent Clifford Willis and Winn candidate Orville Klumpp for a three year term, while four year term candidates Dr. Howard Dearing and John Wilberding ran unopposed. Dearing led with 68 votes, Wilberding 66, Klumpp 61, Willis 60, and Oren 16. Oren hinted at future Education Board runs.

Campaign manager named for Bentley Senate bid

Thomas W. Northway 32 of 518 E High Street Mt Pleasant has been named chairman of the Isabella County campaign committee for Rep Alvin M Bentley Republican candidate for U S Senate. Northway an English and journalism instructor at Mt Pleasant High School for 10 years is a Michigan State University graduate with a Michigan master’s degree and has served as a delegate to county and state Republican conventions. He is a Mt Pleasant Elks Club member and vice president of Clare Isabella District Michigan Education Association. Northway said a campaign organization meeting will be held in Mt Pleasant later this month.

New Type Driver's License Issued by State

The Department of State stops issuing the old white on black licenses and replaces them with a black on grey, safety paper card that resists defacement. The change improves readability and is projected to save well over $12,000 annually while protecting driver identity and offering a pocket synopsis of the Point System and Financial Responsibility law.

Ordination of Rev. Lloyd Van Lente Highlighted at Michigan Conference

Lloyd R. Van Lente, former Holland businessman turned Methodist minister, was ordained Elder alongside 22 others at the Michigan Annual Conference in Albion. The ceremony marked the largest ordination class in Bishop Reed’s twelve years, with 15 Deacons ordained and a missionary couple commissioned to the Congo. Van Lente will remain at the Shepherd charge for another year, also serving the Mt. Pleasant Indian Mission at the Chippewa See.
