Paul O Bagwell, 46, Republican, filed petitions with Michigan elections director Bob Montgomery after gathering over 20000 signatures from all 83 counties to enter his name as a gubernatorial candidate He called for debates to let voters judge the campaigns programs.
Isabella County registrations fell by 436 since 1958, totaling 12 923 in 1960 alongside a statewide drop of 34 822 registered voters since 1958. Michigan adds machine precincts with 9 231 voting machines. paper ballots decline 252 precincts to 1 619.
Secretary James M. Hare announces Dick Murphy will manage the Shepherd Auto License Plate Office on a fee basis. The branch opens June 16 1960 at the Dick Murphy Agency in the former Post Office Building on Wright Avenue, adding to Shepherd’s service options.
Newell L. Oren withdraws from a Shepherd School Board race citing misinformation. He now supports Clifford Willis and Orville Klumpp for the June 13 election, praising Willis’s past board service and noting Winn should be represented by Klumpp. He invites future petition support if he runs later.
The Shepherd Village Council discussed ending free rubbish collection citing insufficient funds and staff. They considered options including contracting out or user fees, while discarding ending the service as impractical. They also reviewed expanding recreation programs as funds borrow for future water needs.
Midland Republican Lynn O. Francis announces candidacy for re election in the August 2 primary. He represents the 24th Senatorial District covering Bay, Midland and Isabella counties and has served since 1954 with prior re elects in 1958 and 1959. He has chaired the Corporation Committee and chaired or sat on labor, appropriations and highways. He is a partner in Francis and Wetmore, a Midland law firm.

The 15th Annual 4-H Horsepulling Contest drew a large crowd at Winn Sun. Nine teams competed with five lightweight and four heavyweight entries. Charles Hall of Winn won lightweight first, Dan Bekin Comstock Park second, Clair Auslander Decker third. Henry Heran Hesperia won heavyweight first. Cecil Darnell Barryton and Clinton Young Winn followed. Net proceeds totaled 86.48 plus confession-stand profits, boosting County 4-H Clubs finances.
The Shepherd Chamber of Commerce voted to place three more rubbish containers along Wright Avenue to curb littering. Officials note many residents still discard candy wrappers and debris on sidewalks and urge public cooperation. Violators risk state law and village ordinance penalties.
The Knights of Columbus and St. Ann's Altar Society sponsor a chicken Bar-B-Cue and bazaar at Beal City K of C Hall on Sunday June 12. Serving 12 to 5 P M. Prices are 1.50 for adults and 75 cents for children. Entertainment for all ages invites the community.
State Representative Russell H. Strange Jr. of Clare announces intent to run again for the Michigan House of Representatives and will file nomination petitions for the August 2 Republican primary. He completed a second term representing Isabella and Clare Counties since January 1957 and has held key committee assignments under Speaker Don R. Pears.
