Volunteers under Claude Stump raised the original sugar house and added a woodshed to keep sap pan wood dry. The project boosts future production at the sugar house as pictured with Stumpp Augustine and Rhynard inspecting progress.
Isabella County's 1960 Annual Youth Fair runs August 16 to 20 at Island Park Mt Pleasant. Fair manager announces new entertainment by Grand Ole Opry stars Stoney Cooper Wilma Lee Clinch Mountain Clan plus Animal O Bama Buffalo act and chariot races.
Philip R. Epple chair of the Isabella County Democratic Committee issued a call for a Democratic Convention to meet at 8 00 PM in the Mt Pleasant Court House. Delegates will be chosen by a 1958 Secretary of State vote basis with a minimum of two delegates per township or precinct and a total of 81 delegates. Delegates are elected at the primary on a write in ballot.
The Ardner family met Sunday July 17 at John Young’s Winn home to honor Ammon Clouser age 95 visiting from Bowling Green Ohio with his son Raymond. Attendees included Ida and Henry Ardner John Alma Wanda Young Bill Jane Dave Hackett Mrs Blanch Bailey and others from Detroit. A cooperative noon dinner followed by games and visiting.
Mrs. Harry Frary was cutting weeds in her chicken yard last week when she felled a pig weed six feet ten inches tall. She hopes to spend another year raising only chickens.
Five year old Gale Heiden daughter of Mr and Mrs Heiden of Shepherd was seriously injured when a car started to roll backward as she entered from Sunday School. The Heiden car then backed into Orchard Avenue traffic striking Ralph Brickner’s vehicle. Both injured were treated at area hospitals and are reported recovering.
Rex Williams an insurance agent at 201 Third Street Shepherd joined 149 other State Mutual Insurance Company agents as a guest at the July 16 Tiger Yankee baseball outing. The trip was a reward for agents increasing property policy sales during March April and May over the prior year. Williams joined the group for a luncheon in Farmington.
Super Products Inc plans a 40 by 120 foot plant to replace the burned facility and will demolish the old building. A 28 by 32 mixing room 36 by 60 storage room and 20 by 36 office will be added on the site. President Ray Amburn said operations should resume by September 1 and new dust control devices will reduce nuisance to neighbors.
First Lieutenant Theodore W Hummel of Shepherd Michigan receives a Certificate of Achievement from Lieutenant Colonel C F Sills chief of Army Security Agency Alaska. He earned the award for outstanding meritorious service as Detachment Commander at the United States Army Security Agency Support Detachment Northern Area Eielson Air Force Base Alaska from August 1959 to June 1960. A 1958 Central Michigan University graduate he arrived in Alaska in November 1958 to take his current post.
